I love food. I love talking about it, I love making it, I love learning about foods' cultural and social histories- I even considered becoming a food historian! Being in the kitchen feels natural and meditative to me. Alas, ever since puberty, I gain weight with the greatest of ease, and it takes me a looong time to lose it. My epicurean interests make me try to defy my natural tendencies toward weight gain- it feels unfair that I shouldn't be able to indulge in the finer parts of life! So, I do- I try to ignore my body's messages, and dare it to make me regret it. But it often does...
Luckily, I love being active, so I have never been severely overweight. However, I have been carrying an extra twenty to thirty pounds on and off for all of my adult life. I have had short periods where I feel comfortable- healthy, finally exultant in my body, but that quickly fades as I celebrate- always by eating! At times, I feel mystified that I could be as active as I am and still feel unhealthy.
On a friend's suggestion, I checked out SparkPeople and finally came to terms with what I had been ignoring for years: it's the calories, stupid. Not only has Spark People helped me understand portions and the caloric value of my food without me having to buy into an expensive 'system', I also have become far more conscious of the nutrients in my food and creating balance in my diet.
I am really encouraged that there is hope for me yet to be a healthy, moderate, slender food-lover!
