Time for a new healthy lifestyle

Hi, I'm a 65 year old grandmother who has just retired (I've longed for this for 45 years) I've always wondered what it would be like to just be a housewife with no particular career I love not beating the clock every morning at 5:00 am and coming home at night so tired. I've had a weight problem most of my life and yoyo diets coming out my ears. I'm ready to get serious now. I've played around with SP a few months and stayed in step one all this time. I've had a weight problem most of my life and yoyo diets coming out my ears. I'm ready to get serious now. I've played around with SP a few months and stayed in step one all this time. I was ready to move on to #2 when I could log in on my nutrition page. Took me a while to figure out how and now I love it, it is so easy.

My Program:
Strive to eat healthy food and really watch my portion control. Zone in on the healthy eating and exercise and not become obsessed with the weight ticker although I want it to move. My eating lifestyle needs to change and the weight will change also. As my healthy lifestyle takes over my deepest desire for this change is to get off some medicines I'm on after getting 2 stents. I feel so much better when off them. I missed one day of meds and the next morning I had such energy I couldn't understand the change. I went to take my evening dose and discovered I had missed the evening before. I want off my medicine but can't unless my lab values also go down.

Personal Information:
I live in the hot southwestern corner of Missouri, 85 miles west of Springfield, Mo and 180 miles south of Kansas City, Mo. We have 3 living children, (our 3rd son went home with the Lord at 16 yrs of age). We have 8 grandchildren ranging from 30 down to 12. Love everyone of them. None live close, at least 3-4 hours away but we and they hit the road for visits often.

Other Information:
I enjoy music and play the piano. During my junior and senior years in high school I taught piano and earned money to buy my school ring, pictures and spending money for other things. I love to read, and study most all articles on health and cooking. I enjoy old westerns and comedies of the 40's thru 80's. I love animals and the outdoors.

Hi...finally getting back to you. Been busy with grandkids, the produce and fruit sales, and the State Fair....judged rabbits today...poultry tomorrow. Summer's almost over and I have so much to do around here...made a list last night of things that must be done on this farm before winter, and so far, it's at number 37....think I'll pack it all in and go visit a daughter's family in Hawaii....I have a huge willow tree that has to come down this wk...it's leaning over and the roots are starting to come up out of the ground...once it's down, it will be a huge job, burning the small branches, chipping some of the bigger branches, and sawing up the firewood...just what I needed ....more projects around here. talk to you later....stay well and God bless..........Joy

Good for you for retiring and I'm so glad you found SparkPeople! From what I've experienced here... it really helps on SO many levels. It's made me realize (after years of hearing this concept) that I have to work on myself and make my health a priority (so I can be there for everyone else when they need me). I hope you enjoy not working... but your time will probably fill up fast. My parents retired ~10 years ago and they're MUCH busier than we are! =) Don't be afraid to try the meatless/vegetarian meat substitutes... like Gardenburger, Morningstar, and Boca products (all in the freezer section). Many of them taste great, are low fat, EAST and quick to prepare, and have no cholesterol. Watch the sodium though... but even there most of them have less than their comperable meat product. All the best on your journey...

I'm not going to let the ticker RULE my encouragement or discouragement. I definately want it to move down but if isn't as fast as I would like, if I dwell on it that is a receipe for quiting. My health is the first issue and changing my eating style for good health will slowly bring my weight down. If I stay on that track, success will be easier to achieve for me.
