Shannan and I on Blood Mountain in GA during our hike on the Appalachian Trail. All smiles.

Another shot on hubby's Chopper bike. I felt like I was 10 years old again. A good day. ;-)

Riding my hubby's new Chopper bike early Fall 2013. He turned it into a motorized bicycle.

One Step at a Time

I re-joined Spark People in November 2012, and started moving forward and feeling healthy and strong. Then I found myself in a rut once again. However, my husband and I made a decision in January 2013 to get ourselves out of that rut and go on a big adventure. We prepared to walk the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine...a dream I've carried in my heart for four years. I'm not the fastest hiker, but I enjoyed each day and meeting new people. We saw beautiful scenery and visited interesting towns. A leg injury meant I had to get off the trail in Hot Springs, NC. We hiked for 6 weeks and traveled 273 miles. It changed my perspective, and now I'm doing more outdoors activities and weekend backpacking trips. We're gearing up to go back to the AT for a second attempt in April 2015. I will be posting updates on our preparation and fitness progress soon.

One thing I learned on the AT is that we have good days and bad days. But we can meet our goals and plow through obstacles by showing up each day and walking one baby step at a time.

My Goals:
My current goal is to lose 67 lbs. before my backpacking adventure on the Appalachian Trail in April 2015. This will put me at 200 lbs. While I will still be overweight by at least 25+, I will be lighter and stronger to handle the rigorous conditions of the trail. I will lose the additional weight while hiking (trust me...it comes off quite easily when you are burning 5,000+ calories a day).

I am breaking my weight loss into three segments:
1st - Lose 25 lbs. by October 1st, 2014. (started in mid-July)

2nd - Lose 25 lbs. by January 1, 2015.

3rd - Lose 17+ lbs by April 1, 2015. 200 lb. goal weight by start of trail (between April 1-15)

My Program:
Heart Healthy Meal Plan with focus on fresh foods, organic when possible. Low-Sodium, Low-Cholesterol, and Low-Sugar.

Exercise:
Want to walk 2 miles 5x a week. Some days I will do 6 miles or more.

Go on bi-weekly backpacking trips. Generally I can hike 15+ miles a day on rugged terrain carrying a backpack (15-30lbs)

I will do stretching, light yoga (no meditation), and strength training exercises. As I drop weight, I may do intervals of light jogging in my walking routine, and I also want to try doing a little trail running.

Diet:
I want to use the Food Tracker as my daily food journal and record how foods make me feel, what agitates heart palpitations, etc. I want to eliminate foods that hurt my overall health.

My changes in eating habits including eating more meatless meals, and also eating lean meats, poultry and fish. (Spark calls this being a "flexitarian"). I want to cut most gluten out of my diet. I want to continue eliminatin

Personal Information:
I'm a mixed-media artist from Indiana with a passion for old things...anything from kitschy retro to shabby chic Victorian elegance. I love using my art (and sometimes poetry) to explore ideas, emotions, and my faith. Even something as simple as creating an art journal page can reveal something hidden about myself or even the mysteries of God. I love sharing this passion with others, and often create works for others as a form of prayer and blessing.

I'm married to a supportive husband who is on his own journey for better health and fitness. He helps coach basketball to youth and plays on various sports leagues. He loves me and tells me I'm beautiful all the time, no matter how much I've gained (or lost). He's my best friend.

Other Information:
"In spite of everything I shall rise again: I will take up my pencil, which I have forsaken in my great discouragement, and I will go on with my drawing."
~Vincent van Gogh

(Good philosophy for many things in life!)

"One of the most difficult parts of changing how you live and how you eat is believing that change is possible.
We all say we believe that, but many of us, deep down in our hearts believe that it's possible for other people, but not for us.
That other people can do it, that the glowy warm life we imagine is for other people, not for us.
We have an unconscious belief that we can't do it, it's hopeless, and so, on some level, we stop making an effort.
We lapse into the way it always was or is. But change really is possible.
And it really does take a fierce kind of longing, and a fierce kind of love for yourself.
For the life you know is possible. Ask yourself what you love most of all.
Do you love your life? And are you willing to take action on your own behalf?"

"In terms of days and moments lived, you'll never again be as young as you are right now, so spend this day, the youth of your future, in a way that deflects regret. Invest in yourself. Have some fun. Do something important. Love somebody extra. In one sense, you're just a kid, but a kid with enough years on her to know that every day is priceless."

"I believe that we are who we choose to be.
Nobody's going to come and save you. You've got to save yourself.
Nobody's going to give you anything. You've got to go out and fight for it.
Nobody knows what you want except for you.
And nobody will be as sorry as you if you don't get it.
So don't give up on your dreams."
