My husband Shannan and I at Springer Mountain, GA...the start of the AT

Smoky Mountain Nat'l Park by Fontana Dam (lost 10 or so lb. by this point)

My leg injury a couple days after I fell. The bruises actually got darker than this before fading.

One Step at a Time
I re-joined Spark People last November, and started moving forward and feeling healthy and strong. Then I found myself in a rut once again. However, my husband and I made a decision a couple months ago to get ourselves out of that rut and go on a big adventure. We're now walking the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine...a dream I've carried in my heart for four years. I'm not the fastest hiker, but I'm enjoying each day and meeting new people. We're now walking the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine...a dream I've carried in my heart for four years. I'm not the fastest hiker, but I'm enjoying each day and meeting new people. We're seeing beautiful scenery and visiting interesting towns. It's changing my perspective, and I'm doing it....one baby step at a time!

My Goals:
I want to lose at least 90 lbs. for better health. I want a healthier heart, and I also hope to heal my body of PCOS/infertility without medication or surgery. (Weight loss increases chances of fertility and shrinks cysts.) My approach this time around is not based on a timeline, but rather making specific goals to change my eating habits and establish an exercise routine. I also want to create goals for better self-care, such as taking vitamins, reg. visits to dr., etc.
My Program:
Heart Healthy Meal Plan with focus on fresh foods, organic when possible. Low-Sodium, Low-Cholesterol, and Low-Sugar. Exercise: My doctor wants me to walk or do low-impact aerobics at least 30 minutes 5 days a week. I am also stretching, doing some pilates, and toning exercises. I am saving for an elliptical. I want to use the Food Tracker as my daily food journal and record how foods make me feel, what agitates heart palpitations, etc. I want to eliminate foods that hurt my overall health. My changes in eating habits including eating more meatless meals, and also eating lean meats, poultry and fish. (Spark calls this being a "flexitarian"). I want to cut most gluten out of my diet. I want to continue eliminating caffeine and sugar from my diet and eating healthy fats.
Personal Information:
I'm a mixed-media artist from Indiana with a passion for old things...anything from kitschy retro to shabby chic Victorian elegance. I love using my art (and sometimes poetry) to explore ideas, emotions, and my faith. Even something as simple as creating an art journal page can reveal something hidden about myself or even the mysteries of God. I love sharing this passion with others, and often create works for others as a form of prayer and blessing. I'm married to a supportive husband who is on his own journey for better health and fitness. He helps coach basketball to youth and plays on various sports leagues. He loves me and tells me I'm beautiful all the time, no matter how much I've gained (or lost). He's my best friend.
Other Information:
"In spite of everything I shall rise again: I will take up my pencil, which I have forsaken in my great discouragement, and I will go on with my drawing." ~Vincent van Gogh (Good philosophy for many things in life!)
