Recently turned 60. Good time to reevaluate and make changes for a heathier and happier lifestyle.

In a 100 Days of Weight Loss lesson we were asked to choose a new title or way of thinking about our selves. My choice - Healthy & Vibrant.

In the 2017 Winter 5% Challenge there has been an ongoing discussion about choosing a word for the year and I chose Explore. After giving this some more thought I felt I needed to choose a word for the different aspects of my life:

Mental - Explore - Don't get mentally stale
Emotional - Balanced - Even out the highs & lows
Physical - Strong - Keep up with physical conditioning
Spiritual - Engaged - Take time to listen, pray and serve

Winter 5% Challenge Exercise Committment -
CARDIO
1. Plan A - Walk 5 times per week for at least 20 - 30 minutes with our dog Trixie as my walking partner.
2. Plan B - Use walk at home dvd or Wii fit program when weather is bad (raining or the heat/humidity combination is too much) or unexpected caregiving duties interfere.
STRENTH TRAINING
3. Strength train upper body 3 times a week using a workout dvd.
4. Have added a new exercise video with several routines to keep things fresh. Got a yoga mat for floor exercises.

Winter 5% Diet Commitment
1. Track meals and keep my calorie intake to 1500 a day.
2. Eat a balanced diet of carbs, protiens, healthy fats and fiber.
3. Explore new recipes and try new foods with an emphasis on fruits, vegetables and lean meats. Maybe even get over my fear of cooking fish!
4. Do a better job of limiting sodium.

Ten Reasons I Want To Lose Weight
1. Improve overall health and wellbeing. - Succeeding!
2. Be kinder to my joints, especially my knees and ankles.- Succeeding!
3. Lower my cholesterol. Support my already good BP and Blood Sugar numbers. Will be checked again in late spring
4. Be kinder to my digestive system. - Still working on this.
5. Have more strength and stamina. - Getting better .
6. Tone my arms and have it show. - Making progress !
7. Age gracefully.
8. Become more flexible. - Making progress!
9. Have better balance / physical stability. - Making progress!
10. Be there for the ones I love.

Eating good foods prepared in a healthy way with lots of fruits and vegetables. Watching portion sizes. Finding fun ways to exercise and get moving.

    Thanks for the advice about my fall. I'm really lucky that no bones got broken because it was such a sudden and fast fall I didn't have time to reach out and help myself lessen the blow of the fall. Each day I'm better and have been able to keep up my walking exercise. I feel blessed!

    Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed my blog about the reward cycle. Great idea to 'piggy-back' your habits - brewing the coffee is now the cue to empty the dishwasher - good job! I also like knowing that the more we action our good habits, the easier it becomes to establish other good habits. We start to seek the reward of 'feeling in control' or something. Another aspect of this is that it's all driven by risk (going back to animal evolutionary terms) so 'feeling in control' is a reward well worth seeking as it reduces risk immensely.

    Turning on my computer cues me to sit here and chat (social reward) and is over-riding my running togs (strength/well-being reward)!
