It has been a while since I've been on the Spark People website. I have to say that I stopped entering the site because I lost motivation and my weight hasn't moved. I set goals of "Lose 20 pounds by..." as you can see by my profile goals. Well, it has been almost a year and I STILL haven't lost those 20 pounds. Upset? Not really anymore because I gained drive and determination and found a strength I never knew I had.

Almost a year ago I ran my first 10K in a Turkey Trot. I've never been a runner. In fact, I was always one of those people that said, "I can't run. My body shape (pear) isn't a runner's body!" Well, I still stand by the words that I don't have a runner's shape BUT I picked up the runner's mentality. After the first 10K I was hooked and afterwards set a new goal of a 10K Mud Run. With two 10Ks under my belt I set a bigger goal of a half-marathon. I'm so proud to say that I accomplished that goal on 11/12/11!

The most amazing thing about accomplishing this goal was the journey. Training for months in preparation for the marathon taught me a lot about myself. Pounding the pavement almost everyday for 1 or 2 hours gave me a lot of "me" time and I found out just how much of myself-talk had been negative. I found my inner voice was very critical and filled with self-doubt. The time spent running provided a challenge to myself to overcome those thoughts, to push past my negative outlook, and to really challenge and push my body and mind in ways I never dreamed. What an exhilarating feeling to overcome, to conquer, and be proud of one's self!

Do I still have a weight loss goal? Yes. I believe I will cross that finish line also. But, unlike in days past it will be a journey to discover myself and the reason I put the weight on in the first place. I will take it one day at a time and just like training for a marathon push myself even when I'm in doubt.

Now,... what marathon should I run next?
