In elementary school I was always the girl to get picked first for sports. I was faster than everyone including the boys. I could sprint like crazy and I was usually the quarterback when we played football. I climbed trees with my brothers and had tons of excess energy. I was stick thin.
Then my teens hit! Ughh! I never expected to be the fat girl. I started gaining weight in small increments and before I realized it, I was 180 lb. Even though my sister and I always danced together, choreographed routines and did 80's aerobics work-out videos. I was in track in 7th grade and gymnasts in 8th, but the weight kept piling on. Looking back I realized that at the time I was eating super-sized fast food meals and lots of sugar and candy. I was basically eating the same amount as my brothers and sister but they didn't ever get overweight. I hated it. I thought it was just so unfair. I just couldn't understand it at the time. Though I started gaining the weight at 12 I didn't really begin to define myself as a fat person until years later in high school. And don't even get me started on college and the "freshmen 15". In any case, I finally stood up and took responsibility for all that junk I put into my body. I still love to exercise and know that I am a athlete at heart. I am going to get on the treadmill after work in the workout room there and work out at home when I'm not working. I see that as far as meals go, it just takes a lot of pre-planning and prep work but as long as I commit myself to it and make it a priority I will succeed. After years of yo-yo dieting and exercise programs that lasted 3 months at best, I am ready to change my life, one small goal at a time.

My Goals:
My goal is to reach a healthy weight where I can live an active lifestyle. I love to exercise and I love sports so being overweight has really been detrimental to my personality. I am also working on getting into medical school. I would like to be a heart surgeon, but I want to be able to set an example to my patients. I also want to set an example in my family. Diabetes and heart disease are deep in both sides of my family and I want to be a help to those around me, especially those younger than myself.

My Program:
I am starting over today 11-29-09. I am going to start off by exercising at least 4 days a week, at least 30 min per day. I am doing New York City Ballet Video (it is 60 min.) plus strength training three days/week and walking or jogging on the treadmill after work whenever I can.

I am doing dietary plan through a Medical weight management program. I really like it. I just have to pre-plan my meals and keep track of what I eat. Finding time for food prep and planning is the hardest obstacle, but I am overcoming it.

Other Information:
I love music. I play the flute, piano, and alto saxophone. Classical is my favorite, but I also like gospel, latin, hindi, new age (like Enya and Afro-Celt Soundsystem), Soundtracks (good ones) and some pop. Reading is another favorite hobby. Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte are my favorite authors. I also really like to write and hope to one day publish a novel. However, my number one goal at this point is medical school.

Dee, thank you so much for the recent encouragement on my blog! This journey is definitely not easy, especially when you are the big woman in a world of little women. The SP community is my lifeline and I hope that you are finding the support and encouragement you need, also. Let's do this and show the world and ourselves, that inner athlete!
