Is "marathon" a word in the dictionary?

I have been overweight most of my life. Is "marathon" a word in the dictionary?

I have been overweight most of my life. I exercised on and off throughout my life but didn't get into intense exercise until about the year 2000 (just after my first child) when I began martial arts (Tae Kwon Do). I had been training in TKD for two years when I was just fed up with not losing weight. I spoke to an exercise physiologist friend of mine who encouraged me to begin running. I had to laugh at her because just jogging around a small high school wrestling room 4-5 times before TKD made me so exhausted I could barely begin my training.

My friend suggested I begin slow. She said when I go out for my run just run to a certain spot in the road - a tree, a crack in the sidewalk, a house, etc. then stop and walk for a minute or so and do it all over again. Well, I took her advice and my first time out I ran/walked two miles!

I was so excited about my two miles that I called my friend and shared my story. She was such a huge encourager as she said "GIRL, YOU ARE A RUNNER!" Again, I had to laugh!

Well, the following year I ran my first 5K, 10K, and half marathon! Who would have thought years down the road I would be where I am now. I joked that the word "marathon" wasn't even in my dictionary. Well, guess what? It is in my dictionary and I have "visited" the word three times!

In 2008 I decided to explore the world of triathlons and what I realized is that I love racing triathlons even more than foot races. During 2008 I raced 5 triathlons. I was 6 second shy of getting 3rd place in my age group during my first tri so, of course, I had to add more to my schedule. During 2008 I ended up winning 2nd place in the Athena (over 150 lbs) division in two triathlons - one a sprint tri and the other an Olympic-distance tri.

My weight journey

I reached my first big goal of being in ONEderland (the 100's) the first week of 2008. However, during 2008 I ended up going back up the scales to 202 lbs (where I sit today - March 25, 2009). My goal is to reach 155 lbs by the end of August 2009 so I still have some work to go.

The following was written in early 2008 when I updated my page last: "As a runner I have found I wasn't eating enough calories and just couldn't get past the 200's. Once I increased the calories, added some variety (cross training) and added bursts of higher intensity interval training (see my favorite articles below) I feel I may have found the key to my weight loss plateau issues. Time will tell and I'll be sure to update you all here!"

Heya, Skinny! Actually, the "Accountability and Support" page you left a comment on is my journal :). You are more than willing to stop in and leave comments, but it's not a group, per se. Just some random thoughts and updates about my weight loss and life in general. You can always start your own community journal and title it whatever you like, then people can know what you are up to at all times! emoticon
