I am finally trying to really take control of my lifelong problem with food. In the summer of 2009, after a friend told me about Sparkpeople, I signed up and have not missed a day of tracking since June 15, 2009. Even when I "mess up," I enter the food I have eaten. In the past, those mess ups would trigger a lengthy fall off the wagon. Now, treating this as a lifestyle change, I just get back on track the next day. And, when I am stalled in my progress, I have that report staring at me ...

In the summer of 2009, after a friend told me about Sparkpeople, I signed up and have not missed a day of tracking since June 15, 2009. Even when I "mess up," I enter the food I have eaten. In the past, those mess ups would trigger a lengthy fall off the wagon. Now, treating this as a lifestyle change, I just get back on track the next day. And, when I am stalled in my progress, I have that report staring at me with the truth of why rather than all the excuses I have used in the past. I now cook most of the time and eat out or use convenience foods very rarely. I really want to get off of the medications I have had to take in recent years as my weight and age have finally given me the reality check that there are consequences beyond just "not being cute" from being overweight. A family history of heart disease means it is time to get serious about being healthy and "looking good" is not even the issue anymore!

My Goals:
I have lost 70 pounds and plan to lose another 10. I'm taking it slow this time because I have made this a lifestyle change rather than a diet that has an end!
I have recently added exercise to my program. My doctor and I agreed that once I reach the goal of these last 10 pounds I can try to get off the medications for blood pressure and cholesterol! I have already been able to get off of using a sleep apnea machine. Yay!


My Program:
I use the foodtracker every day even when I "mess up." That keeps me honest.
I cook for myself rather than eat out or eat takeout food as I had for many years. Very rarely are butter, bread, or sweets in my diet anymore.

Personal Information:
I am a mother, grandmother, mentor, friend, budding professor, graduate student and all around overextended individual. LOL!

Other Information:
I sing jazz standards, sometimes in paying gigs. Love many kinds of music--jazz being at the top of the list. R&B, Soul, Pop, Classical, Opera, World music round out my loves. And, most importantly, Michael Jackson has been a part of my life and musical history since I was 12.

Your name is great! Your story reminds me that it takes time and persistence to make permanent changes. Thank you for sharing your story with me and others here!

I am working on losing about 50 pounds. I lost 30 before and gained them back over time. I have been tracking my food - whatever I eat - and it definitely helps - especially when I see the nutritional information about my bad food choices. I do walk for exercise almost everyday and stay fairly active. I am also a singer and composer and have written a number of songs about world peace and the fact that it is indeed possible. Would you be my friend here?

SingForPeace, you are truly an inspiration. I, too, need to begin a new lifestyle for life for a healthy future. If I went over my meal goals, I would just stop logging what I ate for the rest of the day. I hope to adopt your method and log, no matter what!! I need to lose about 70 lbs. I live in Hazleton, PA and have a great friend in Northampton. I would love to be your Spark Friend.
