SilverSonnet's Saga

I'm a 50-year-old wife, mother (4 of my own, ages 32, 31, 29 and 27 plus two step kids ages 28 and 26), grandmother (12, 5-year-old twins, 2, almost 2, 1 month and 4 and 1 for the step grands) and daughter. I teach English at one university (my "real" job) and technical writing at another (just for fun :).

I've fought my weight my entire adult life with little success, but two years ago, something clicked. The weight fell off--I lost 45 pounds in 5 months, and it was EASY. Problem is, now that I'm back home and in my normal routine, I've gained back almost 30 of those pounds. I just can't seem to get back in the groove.

I was officially on Weight Watchers when I lost weight, but I was not following their plan; I think the accountability was one of the big factors for me. Now that's I'm home, I really dislike the WW group in my area: the leader has never reached her goal weight, and much of her advice is counterproductive.

SO I'm hoping this site will provide the support, friendship and ccountability I need to get back to losing.

My Goals:
I want to lose weight for my health (diabetic and managing with diet). Also, I want to be able to buy nice clothes, make my husband proud of me, and be able to keep up with the grandkids and maybe do some traveling.

My Program:
I'm loosely following the life plan in the book _Reversing Diabetes_: high (complex) carb, high fiber, low fat and protien. I plan to walk 10,000 steps a day or ride my bike the same distance.

The upcoming Mother’s Day provides a perfect opportunity to the women in my life. Have you ever noticed that women take care of others before they care for themselves? I am sure that this has something to do with biological functions, probably ingrained into our caring behaviors as children, but you need not have had a child to be a caring and loving woman and thus “mother others!”

Therefore, I wanted to express my appreciation for you in my life. Thank you for being you!

So often I meet women who say I am just a homemaker. Wow, that is a full time job in itself. Then I meet women who work one or two full time jobs, one being a homemaker, as well. It amazes me to see so many women who raise a family, cook, clean, and provide a shoulder to lean on . . . you are all SUPERWOMEN!! So I want to remind you to love how special you are to those around you. You are fantastic that you are balancing and juggling so many things at the same time. You are powerful and strong, you can become whatever you want, and you can say it with conviction!
Thank you for being you!

I was reading some older emails today and saw that you had joined our 50+ Members, High Blood Pressure and Managing DiabetesTeams so I thought I would stop by, say hi, and welcome you to the teams...better late than not at all. You will receive lots of support and encouragement from everyone. Just post any prayer requests, questions, comments or suggestions you may have and someone will respond quickly.
You have come to the right place. Take advantage of what Spark has to offer. I want to see you accomplish your goals. Stay focused and keep a positive attitude as this will be a great help to you in your daily life!!! Smile although sometimes that is the hardest, but it really helps!!! And, if nothing else, it makes people wonder what you're up to.
Remember to just take one day at a time on this journey of a lifetime. This journey consists of many small steps, a few speed bumps and pot holes, and a lot of fun. I will be here for you and try to help you on this journey to your goals. YOU can do this!!!
Commit yourself to constant self-improvement — the joy is truly in the journey! You are creating a body that is strong and balanced!
Watch your portion control. Be sure to drink plenty of water (8 - 8oz glasses a day) and walk. Water and walking will help you on this journey of weight loss and lowering numbers. Start small if that is all you can do or have time to do and add to it as you are able. Even 5-10 minutes several times a day adds up to bigger numbers and will keep you moving. Invest in a good pedometer (about $10) and see how many steps you currently take each day. Before long you will be adding steps just to see how many you can do and how far you can go. WHAT A GREAT MOTIVATOR!!! YOU can do this!!! It's good to meet and have you with us. CONGRATULATONS on your 1.5 pound weight loss...all the little numbers add up the the bigger ones. WOOHOO!!!
God bless you on your journey to a healthier you. Take each day as it comes and enjoy it to the fullest!!!
God's blessings to you.
Hugs,
Helen

Congrats on your weight loss. I had trouble with WW too. There was very little support from other members and I got bored. One thing I found out is if you are not finding the support on a team to go a different one. There are so many teams on SP you are bound to find one (or more) you like. So Welcome to SP and I'll see you at the next Monday weigh-in!
