Silverback's Bungle in the Jungle

Iíll start with the punch line Öso far Iíve lost about 100 pounds. My blood pressure has dropped about 25-30 points (both types), my heart rate has fallen from in the 90s to the 60s, a persistent cough has vanished, a snore that would shake the rafters has disappeared. Instead of getting a very deep chest cold that lasted for a months after any flu bug, my recent bout with a cold bug lasted one week and no complications afterwards. I can even see my feet !!! This didnít happen overnight. ...
It didnít happen all by itself. How did it happen? Ö Read on.

Back in early May 2009 I started a home version of the ďBiggest LoserĒ contest with my oldest daughter. Since that wasn't really enough of a challenge I decided to quit a pack a day smoking habit on May 12, 2009. By May 15, I was climbing the walls and started to exercise as an outlet for that raging nervous energy flowing through my body. That certainly helped and then I figured I shouldnít just diet, I should also eat healthy to help with my fitness activities.

My weight was around 315 (probably heavier than that in the before photoís but whoís counting) when I started the weight loss and it was going okay but I was starting flounder. I really didnít know what I was doing, what was the right amount of calories to cut, what foods should I be eating, how I could maximize the benefits of my exercise program. Thatís when I found SparkPeople in mid June of 2009 Ė this amazing free site with incredible resources. I am now a die hard nutrition tracker because of the tools they have free for everyone to use. It is indispensable for weight loss in my opinion. If you track it you will change it. This is true if you are tracking client satisfaction numbers, sales figures, calories ... pretty much anything except the weather.

If you write it down you will do it. That applies to fitness activities as well. I use the fitness tracker but also have an excel spreadsheet where I print of my fitness plan for the day, what weight exercises Iím am going to do, the number of reps, how much weight and what cardio I will do. I canít tell you how many times during a workout Iíve said to myself, I think Iíve done enough, I can stop now and Iíve done a good workout. But then I go back to the bench where I have my water and workout sheet printed and look down at it and see those remaining exercises and 9 times out of 10 I finish the entire workout. Something about seeing those unfinished exercises there with all the other exercises marked complete and that empty space beside them just makes me want to finish what I started. Think it, write it, do it!!

I also found incredible sources of advice on this site, from other users or pointers on where to find what I needed from books and other sources. Spark teams can be an great source of information. One team that I joined was the Burn the Fat - Feed the Muscle team, a team that follows a book by the same name written by Tom Venuto. The message boards were interesting and I figured 745 members canít be wrong. By all means check out this team :

I bought the e-book and found basically all my questions answered in one source. Between the book and this site I learned how to figure out what my calorie intake should be, about creating a calorie deficit with exercise, indentified top foods to include in my diet, created go to meals, zig zagging calories across the week and within a day, how much protein I needed, how to develop different weight lifting workouts for building strength versus endurance versus muscle mass, what my heart rate zones should be for exercise ... and more !!!.

So if all of that wasnít enough to help me succeed, to provide motivation and the resources to reach my goals, these same amazing people reach out and help at every turn. From posting inspiring blogs, to sending messages of encouragement and leading by example. Iíve met many great folk and have the great fortune of calling some of them friend. Most important in all of this has been the support of my family. They have been patiently prodding me to get healthy for a decade or and now that Iíve taken the necessary steps they have been there for me all along. My children have been wonderful in all of this but my beloved, my Erika (Kisheger) has always been my best friend, my voice of reason, my biggest supporter who has given me the strength and the time to make this happen. She even joined SparkPeople because she knew I would appreciate sharing this with her. I could not be happier to look forward to many more decades of life with my beloved by my side.

I wish you luck, love and happiness in your journey.

Thanks for your blog comments - they mean a lot... I don't have much family and now it seems the family I do have ... well I guess I have to let that go for now. I am very grateful for my SP Family - always positive, supportive and encouraging!

Wishing you and Erika a wonderful day and week ahead. Hope we can meet up soon!
