I'M BACK - Again!
I've had more lives than a cat here on Sparkpeople, but that it because it is so good here, that I can't help but keep coming back! I had weight loss surgery on December 14th. (the Duodenal Switch procedure) You can read about it in my blog at http://provolisa.wordpress.com Now, 100 lbs lighter, I am back because I still need the companionship and support, and I still have so much to learn!

My Goals:
My goal is to be 175 lbs, which is completely realistic with the surgery I have selected. It is called the Duodenal Switch. This operation relies on restriction, by making the stomach smaller. However, this operation leaves a complete, working, stomach instead of a pouch. Its main way of causing weight loss, however, is through mal-absorption, where the intestines are re-routed to cause only a small portion of what is eaten to be absorbed into the bloodstream. Therefore, it is important to eat 60-100 grams of protein a day, and to take vitamins and supplements for the rest of my life to prevent serious malnutrition. This may seem like a drastic step, but with a high weight of 495 lbs, and re-gaining 60 lbs after losing 120 lbs the "regular" way, I know I am doing this to save my life.
My Program:
I believe in the basics of Good Nutrition, Moderation, Regular Exercise and Self Motivation. Having weight loss surgery does not negate the importance of any of these principles at all. I will still need to watch what I eat and exercise. I simply won't be hungry while I do it. I believe that for a person as heavy as I am, weight loss is a necessary part of improved health and it is important to look at weight loss in the context of improving my overall health.
