No more excuses!

I've been type 2 diabetic since Dec. 1999. Diabetes runs in my family, so it was inevitable that I would end up with it (though out of six kids, I'm the only one so far). My mom, her sister and her mom were all diabetic.

I am married to my high school sweetheart, although we didn't get married until 37 years after we graduated from high school. (This is the third marriage for both of us - hopefully third time is the charm!)

I am a late bloomer all around. I graduated from college with honors when I was 51 years old. I went back to school in 1994 and continued taking classes just for fun until I lost my job in 2004 and decided it was time to go back for real and finish my degree. I earned 4 certificates in programming languages and an AAS with high honors in Computer Information Systems in 2004, and went on to get a BS in Business Management with high honors in 2007.

I have a dream job. I work for a consulting firm in Chicago that supports database management software geared toward nonprofit associations. I write SQL reports and queries, training manuals, and train users on the product. I work from my home in eastern Michigan and commute to Chicago when necessary (about 8-10 times a year.) So basically, I can work in my pajamas if I so choose ;-)

Over the past few years, especially since I started on insulin, I've gained a lot of weight. My pre-diabetes weight was in the normal range for my height. Since diagnosis I've gained about 65 pounds. I am hoping to lose it before it starts affecting my health any further. I also have been having trouble getting my A1c below 7.0 and that is another goal, before I start having complications from diabetes.

Welcome to SP and to the 55+ Females Team, Sheryl!
Just as your diabetic group recommended SP to you, my RD (dietician) sent me here 4.5 years ago because it is such a solid 'tool' for our health! And beyond that, the support and friendship are great!
Looking forward to getting to know you in the team!
