Shell's Hoping for Success

Hi, I'm 42. married, mother of 2 boys. I've progressively got larger and larger each time I diet and now I am more than I have ever been. I KNOW how to lose weight, exercise and cutting calories, but it is so hard and I cannot stay motivated. I'm so tired of not wanting to look in the mirror or have my picture taken. My oldest son graduates in a week and I'm ashamed of what I look like for his graduation, being the biggest mom of all his classmates. I am literally as round as I am tall.

Looking forward to losing with you! I'm closing in on the 200 pound mark too. Getting from 210 to 200 has been one of the greatest challenges I've ever dealt with. It's truly getting aggravating.

I'm determined this time though. I've reset my goals and decided not to make 200 be a big deal. I'm taking the power away from that number.

Be good to yourself...

Barbara

You and I don't have the same understanding of the purpose of BMR.
A number of years ago, I was in a hospital supervised weight loss program, paid for by health insurance. I was taught the exact same thing that Spark does with BMR. Thirty years ago and more recently at the hospital program, I was also taught about not eating less than the 1200 calories. Reasons given included that anything less was not nutritionally healthy, but also it was risking sending your metabolism into starvation mode.. I experienced it at calories around 1500, and had to up them to 1800. That doesn't work for me any more, as my metabolism has changed. But I know if I cut the calories too low, it would happen again.
We always have to keep in mind that each of us is an individual with individual metabolisms. If you haven't already seen it, there is another thread discussing this same challenge.

I know it can be confusing, but I have been trying to read as many professional articles as I can about it. If you have a good reference that says something else, I would like to see it.

Best wishes on reaching your goals.
