I'm a mom of two teenagers, a 15 yr unschooled daughter who is an avid writer and an artist, and an amazing 17 yr son going into college this year. I adore my teens... they truly are my best friends! My son still lives in SW Washington State, but my daughter and I moved last fall to Northern California... to a wonderful town near the coast and the redwoods. We live way out in the country in a lovely little cabin surrounded by 40 acres of trees and all of my family on adjoining acreage... and I feel so amazingly, wonderfully blessed, and thankful every moment of every day.
Getting to where I am today has definitely been a long journey and a process... but I am totally in love with my life now... and the direction my path is taking.
I chose to go on medication for rapid-cycling bipolar disorder back in 2007. I resisted for a long time... but finally realized I was no longer willing to hurt myself or my children or any other people I love and decided if meds were what I needed to do to change things so that I could successfully cope.. then so be it. They absolutely changed my life, and I am so thankful that I made that choice!
But bipolar wasn't my only challenge... I experienced chronic pain and fatigue... constant muscle pain deep to the bone. I'll be honest in saying that I've never been diagnosed by a physician as to having fibromyalgia or multiple sclerosis... simply because I haven't had the funds to seek medical help, so I've done the research on my own, (discovering that nearly every symptom that I have correlates consistently with MS and fibromyalgia, both) and listened to my intuition, paying attention to my body and my symptoms.
But, whether I could afford it or not, I ended up in the hospital for 3 days a year ago... in August 2011. We thought it was a stroke. It turned out to be Bells' Palsy, thankfully... but after 2 MRI's, the neurologist wrote up a folder for me to follow up with the likely possibility of MS that the MRI showed signs of. I haven't done any follow-up because I can't afford to, and what would they do anyway? Injections every day or every week? No way. Even if I could afford it, I'd rather die, I think. And, besides.. I believe that diet and lifestyle is a much better way of healing the body's symptoms! So... here I am... a year later... and have made some significant changes.
In May I started a year-long intensive course through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition... to become certified as a holistic wellness mentor / coach. When I learned about the school more than a year ago... it really called to me, deep down in my soul. I am already a licensed massage therapist, but have not been practicing for many years due to my own health issues. I figured, if through the lifestyle changes I make from what I learn through this school could heal me to where I could practice massage therapy again, then wouldn't it be even more wonderful if then I can take my own experience and help encourage others in their own healing journey and lifestyle changes, as well? So, in May.. I dived in... and so very thankful that I made the leap!
A month ago... early July 2012... I decided I was tired of being in pain all the time.. and the significantly increasing signs of MS were starting to scare me... losing my sight.. my hearing.. dropping things frequently... etc... and that the only way any of it was going to change was if I made the choice to change it!
So I went on an "MS Diet"..... No dairy, no eggs, no legumes, no nightshade foods, no gluten. I was already a vegetarian (life-long 7th generation, in fact...). Anyway, basically I've become a mostly RAW vegan, with the exception of some macrobiotics choices... lots of whole protein-filled grains like amaranth, quinoa, teff, millet, brown rice, buckwheat, etc... again, I'm listening to my body and my intuition.
The fantastic results are.... in less than ONE month... without even trying... just with those simple diet changes... I lost 13 lbs... my blood pressure and resting heart rate have gone down significantly... still on the high end.. but no longer scary, dangerous high. I am sleeping better... I am stronger... when I play with my dog I can throw her fetching stick farther with less effort. I can hike up our road with much less effort and don't tire as quickly.
Can you feel my excitement?!? I am so curious and anxious to see where the rest of this journey takes my own health and healing... but even more than that... I can hardly wait to share my experience and help others that are on the same frightening and painful path that I have been on... to help them find a new path to walk and to heal themselves... and to fall completely in love with their own lives, too. ~ Evie
My main goal is to lose 35lbs in 6 months (or less... if that happens first, great!).
My secondary goals are that in the process of achieving the main goal, I will be in less pain, lower my very high blood pressure, release stress, feel less fatigue and more energized!
Staying within the boundaries of my SP nutritional goals with a 1250 - 1550 cal/day plan.
Wii Fit Aerobics, Strength and Yoga training, also Turbo Jam. 30 - 60 min/day 4 days/wk.

Licensed as a massage therapist, and also in energy work, but not currently active.

My favourite colour is bright coral / sunset / poppy orange. Can you tell ?? This colour infuses my whole body with life and energy!
My daughter and I are parents to 5 furry purry kitties, one 80 lb. Pit Bull/Shar Pei lap dog named Pixie, and one teeny, tiny 12 week old miniature poodle pup named Biscotti Buttons PoodleBear... who thinks that Pixie is the bees knees and follows her EVERYwhere... they are the two, funniest, cutest doggie creatures ever, and they fill our home with joy and laughter which is beyond all doubt the most wonderful, healing medicine for the soul.

GrammaCathy... as you will note.. I have updated my long-overdue intro section. I actually don't live in OR/WA any longer... but i lived all over the Portland Metro area for 25 years. I met my daughter's dad when he lived in Longview... his favourite restaurant is Hart C's. You probably know where that is! LOL And I'm sure I likely am familiar with many of your favourite Oregon places to go.... Anyway... my daughter and I moved to Northern California last fall... and although I miss the PNW.. I love, love, LOVE where we live.. and don't ever want to move again!

Kudos to you for joining us here on the Raw Foodies Team. This will be one of the best decisions you have ever made. Sparkers come here and join this great team for a multitude of reasons. They may be curious about the health benefits of Raw Food and join to learn all about eating Raw. Many join for the weight loss. Many join the Team for a Detox. There are a great many people who do the Raw Food Diet as a Detox but then they realize how alive they feel and how the pounds melted away so effortlessly they decide to continue to eat this way. There are others who will join this Team for the health benefits of a Raw Food Diet. A diet based on raw food can reverse diabetes, arthritis (I personally have experienced this.
