Sally, first let me say that the whole genealogy thing is very individual; some people really get into it and other do not have any interest at all. Like so many things, we all chose what we want to do with our time. Please do not take my comments as trying to push you to do it; I am just sending them as information. You are right that Ancestry can be expensive; my husband gave me my subscription as a Christmas present and I suspect that will be an annual thing. I do not know how Ancestry operates all over the world, but I have learned that in the US you can do a lot on their site at no cost with what they call a Guest Registration. So if you want to just build a basic tree and use some of their resources there is no charge. The costs are mostly associated with access to various records. The only downside is that it can end up taking a lot of a person's time.

Quick thought, Sally, regarding the piece of "pizza pie" and potential Italian connection. Have you ever thought of taking a DNA test? I think the DNA tests offered through Ancestry.com folks are available in Scotland. As you may know, I was adopted and had no idea who my biological father was. I took the test and found my father and his family, along with a ton of relatives on my mother's side that I had no idea existed. You might find yourself with a whole Italian side. Thank you for stopping by my No Regrets-Part 2 blog and commenting. I have a lot of other regrets in life - I suspect most of us do.
