Summertime.....

It's ironic that now I'm 48 years old, I'm rapidly approaching the best shape of my life. I've been working with a trainer for the last 6 months and he has me doing things I never would have imagined -- deadlifts, weighted squats, etc. When I started refocusing on this journey I weighed in at 154lbs and my body fat was 45%. Now I'm getting cut and my first goal is to get to 125lbs and 22.5% body fat. After that....stay tuned!

Yeah trainer's suck! Granola guy is pretty good. I work out with him once a week on Sunday mornings and he has me do all sorts of weirdo mobility moves that actually help, but just wear me out.

Next competition is at the end of October. I'm training for it, but I'm seriously thinking about waiting till the one after in February. 3 months seems like a long time to train for an event, but it's actually kind of short.

Besides I'm seriously digging the kettlebells. I've run marathons, have lifted over 1000 lbs, so the big thing in Kettlebells is to get a Strongfirst Certification from this crazy Russian dude named Pavel Tsatsouline. It's a series of timed drills doing Double KB Swings, Double Cleans, Double Press, Double Front Squat, Snatches, and Turkish Get-ups. For Men's Masters (over 50 dudes) you do these with 20Kg KBs.....I think it would really suck....so I may shoot for it sometime in the next year or two!

I've got to tell 'ya, Crossfit seems like it's just a little too nutty for me. I see folks doing it a lot at the gyms I go to. Kipping pull-ups, burpees for time, wild kettlebell swings over your head....it looks like a great way to hurt yourself and get exhausted while you're doing it. I'd like to look up a bunch of the 20-somethings I see doing it in a few years and see how they're faring

I see what you're saying. My take is to plan in many shorter bursts of energy. Doing 1-2 minutes workouts 6-8 times a day, takes maybe 15 minutes. Combine that with 45 minutes gym time, it adds up to an hour. Shorter duration, but more frequent workouts....so yeah the MORE is more frequent....the LESS is less time

No one ever accused my of under-analysing a problem!!

Oh believe me, I texted Stasi guy with my scores on the way back home. He was actually complimentary on my total, although he did ask why I didn't simply go for 405 lbs on the deadlift, since that would have been a clean 4 Red Plates...

....freaking Commie!

I use straps in training on my very heavy days, but lately I've been trying to progress without them. They're not allowed in competition. I've also found that my grip is stronger since training without them.

Straps help to do lots of reps with a heavy weight....it keeps your grip from being the limiting factor. These last two months though, I've only been doing 3-5 reps with moderate to heavy weights

Yeah, the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu thing....I had to stop about 2 months ago. I was getting beat up....literally. Besides feeling totally exhausted with everything else I was doing, I was getting bruises & scratches in all sorts of weird places. At 54, in a fairly senior position, showing up at work with bruised arms and scratches down the side of my face raises certain questions.

The good news is that after 4 months of going there with #2 son, he's gained enough confidence and made enough friends that he's self-sustaining....we just renewed his membership for another 6 months and he's getting in to it; I just needed to kick start it for him

My joints are very happy!
