Shared Food & Fitness Trackers
I was diagnosed with high cholesterol in August, 2009. No way was I going on medication without trying the alternative first. So, I immediately got serious about exercise and dieting. By Thanksgiving, I had lost 20 pounds and reduced my cholesterol by 30 points. It took me until the middle of January to lose the next five pounds, but since I got through Christmas without gaining weight, I'm pretty proud of that.
I joined Sparkpeople early in April, 2010. By this time I had lost 30 pounds. One might ask, since I was pretty successful on my own, what I've gained from participation. The biggest thing, I think, is information and inspiration. I've enjoyed tracking. It gives me a clear picture of my behavior. I enjoy reading other people's stories and sharing my story with them. Sparkpeople has also kept me focused on what has been a much slower journey than I expected.
It seems odd, but until I set the ticker for my sparkpage, I had not really set any weight loss goals. So, at that time, I decided that 140 sounded like a good reasonable weight. As of yesterday's weigh in, I now weigh 141 pounds. I may reset my ticker after the New Year but for now Maintenance seems like a good plan.
good life requires daily care and tending...."
...a GOOD life- not just an ok one
...REQUIRES- it's not optional
...DAILY- also not optional
...CARE- this is about attitude and thought...we must think about what we are putting into and doing to our bodies and we must care about this- always!
....and TENDING - tending is more active than passive, like tending the garden. We must take the necessary steps to weed, fertilize and beautify ourselves through exercise and good diet, as well as to care for our skin and hair and minds and souls...
A good life requires daily care and tending.....

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God."
For the time being I want to maintain my weight at 140 pounds. Perhaps after the beginning of the year, I'll reset my goal to 130. Then I could say I'd lost 60 pounds for my 60th birthday.
I would like to get my body fat percentage to "normal." So, I will have to stay serious about the weight training.
Once I hit the 140 pounds, I'm going to focus on the Fitness Measurements in addition to the weight and inches lost.
I pretty much eat anything I want. My program, if you can call it that, is portion control. I try to keep it in my head that a little tastes as good as a lot.
I try to meet the goals on my nutrition tracker. I feel elated when the pie chart looks just right AND I've otherwise met all the requirements.
Most mornings, I walk before work. I often use the elliptical at the gym. I try to attend two strength-training classes a week and lift weights on my own once a week.
I've been married 30 years. We have a 26 year old daughter who is also a Spark member. 15 years ago, we lost our other daughter to cancer at age 13.
I work as a paraeducator. This year my responsibility is to test and maintain records for all the students in the school who have a "Primary Home Language Other Than English." I also share in the interventions for these students.
I like to read and to sew. BORING!
I sing in a praise team at church. I especially enjoy it when I sing solo (so low you can't hear me).
