Growing towards a healthy lifestyle

It's been a while since I have been on Sparkpeople. I am starting anew and am changing my goals. Yes I still want to lose weight, however, my focus is on a heart healthy lifestyle since I am over 50. Always in the past I have just focused on losing weight and have gone on many crazy diets. I just wanted to see the pounds come off as quick as possible.

Now I'm focusing on living a healthy, fun, exciting life. I am focusing on my journey and am going to learn to enjoy the process. Here are some of my goals:

1) Lose an average of 1 pound a week
2)Start doing things that I have always been interested in such as writing.
3)Exercise (starting out with just walking) at least 3 times a week for at least 30 minutes. I will start out with 15 minutes and work my way up to 30. Once I get comfortable with 30 minutes, I will slowly work my way up to 1 hour.
4)Start cooking for myself and stop eating out so much.
5)Become more active with the Spark People Community.

In the weeks to come, I will post a photo, and look forward to getting tips, recipes, and advice from many of you in the community.

So sorry to read about your youth paster. What a shock that must have been to everyone.
I will keep everyone in prayer for peace, understanding and any other unknown needs that you and his family may have at this time.
God bless.
Helen

Hi and welcome to our High Blood Pressure Team where you will find lots of information and loads of support. Just post any questions, comment or suggestions you may have and someone will respond quickly.
Be sure to drink plenty of water and walk. Water and walking will help you on this journey of weight loss and lowering numbers. Start small and add to as you can tolerate. Get yourself a good pedometer (about $10.) and you will find it to be a great motivator also. See how many steps you are currently taking. Soon you will be seeing how many you can do. I started walking out to get my newspaper, then two trips to the paper box a day, then three. Soon I walked the 1/2 block to our post office and had my fiance pick me up and drive me home. Before long I was walking both ways. Then started walking around the block twice a day, now doing three times a day or more depending on how my day is going and the time available. Takes me between 10-15 minutes each time. If the weather is bad, I walk our six steps into the kitchen several times and do it several times a day, Anything to keep me moving at various times throughout the day and raise the number of steps I take just a few more each day. Seems unbelievable that it hasn't been so long ago that I had to stop to catch my breath after walking just a short distance.
God bless you on your journey to a new beginning. Take each day as it comes and enjoy it to the fullest!!!
Hugs,
Helen

I read the story about your pastor. THAT would certainly be an eyeopener. Please count on me to help in any way I can. I've been at the journey a while now...I think since I was born!!!

Anything I can do to help, please let me know.

YOU can do this!!
