I have always led a very active lifestyle - I enjoy running, lifting weights, yoga, etc. I would classify myself as a workout addict. Without exercise I am not a pleasant person.
Since joining spark, I have lost approximately 10 pounds and I feel great. I don't remember ever weighing in the 120's so reaching that goal was a big one for me. Even in high school when I was playing 3 sports and working I always hovered around the 130's and always hated it.
I started tracking my food and realized that even though my caloric intake wasn't too high, I was improperly fueling my body. I didn't make a lot of changes, but I did begin to incorporate a lot more fruits and vegetables and really tried to get the most out of my workouts by always pushing myself. No more riding the elliptical machine just to watch the "calories burned" number get higher. Who knew such small changes could make such a big difference!

Jan 25 2009- Manhattan half marathon DONE! 1 hour, 51 minutes and 14 degrees! BRRR!
February 8, 2009- Bronx half marathon DONE! 1 hour, 55 minutes
March 14- NYRR 8000 Done! 41 min 42 sec, 8:23 min avg)
April 11- Scotland 10k - not a great race for my stomach and it poured rain. oh well. (55 min, 30 sec, 8:57 min avg)
May 16- Healthy Kidney 10k (50 min 50sec, 8:11 pace- DOH! SO wanted to break the 50 min mark!))
May 30- Brooklyn half marathon (6th half marathon) - Done! 2 hours, 11 min, 10 min/mi pace)
June 13- Dash and Splash 10k- 52 min 2 sec, 8:23 pace)
June 21- Long Island Gold Coast triathlon (sprint distance) -done! except it turned into a duathalon due to so much rain runoff! (run1.5, bike 12, run 3) 1 hour 20 min, 8th in my division! yeah!
July 26, 2009- Nautica NYC Triathlon (Olympic distance) Done! 3 hours and 4 minutes 122/268 in my division. Slightly sad it's over.

I exercise 5-6 days a week. My favorite form of cardio is running but I also love high intensity interval training and never underestimate the power of lifting weights!
I really try to focus on eating clean foods and avoid ingredients I don't recognize. Protein is also a very good friend.

Hey! I wondered if you ended up following through with your marathon training and hoped you made the decision not to, given that it was cancelled. Ha. I'm glad you found an alternate marathon to run, even if it was slow and painful! This was your third, right? And how does that work for NYC? Is your registration all set for next year since this year's was cancelled? My half was cancelled, which was a bummer. Especially since I was miserable and hated every second of training for it and had made the decision it would be my last big race of any sort for awhile. I'm exaggerating some, but I was pretty bitter before every long run. So I think for the time being, I'm just going to run for fun (and for less than an hour at a time)... even though I'm a little bummed I didn't get one last race in before my pseudo retirement.
The timing of your note was pretty timely since I had also decided I needed to go back to logging my food and daily weigh-ins starting today. I've been too loosey-goosey lately and I've gained a few pounds and feel gross as a result. I don't know how much exactly since my scale seems to be out of batteries. Are you still nursing? You could be one of the unlucky ones like me who doesn't lose the last few pounds until the nursing winds down. It's cruel, really.

The thing I liked about WW was that it did consider the whole breastfeeding thing and from there it gave the points range. I dealt better with that than I dealt with the whole "eat an extra 500 calories a day" thing. Probably because I would eat junk food instead of good food, and on WW the junk food costs more points. It's silly because I know how to eat and how to eat "well" but I really needed the structure of WW. Anyway... it's not THAT expensive to try it out for a few months. BTW, it's been 15 months and I only just now got down to my pre-pregnancy weight. I have to wonder if I would still weigh a bajillion pounds if I never breastfed at all. So that's the bright side of not losing all the weight immediately, if there's a bright side to be had. Ha.
I have the same issues you have with motivation for the race. I had one decent running week a few weeks ago, but then this past week came and went and I didn't run at all. I'm so mad I signed up for the half. I just don't feel like having the whole "training" thing hanging over my head. And it's just a half! So in theory, I only feel half the dread that you must feel. :) That said, I thought about just not running and forfeiting my fee and I definitely don't want to do that. Therefore, as of today, I'm reluctantly trying to find motivation to train. Good luck with your decision!
Anyway... it's funny how priorities shift, right? I have a hard time putting running above spending time with the baby. But I know how important it is and I know how good it feels to run because I feel like "me" again. We'll find the balance soon, right?

Hi! I was running this weekend... and sucking at it... and I thought of you and how you were training for a marathon and told myself to stop being such a baby. Anyway, hope all is well with you and your little girl!

That is AMAZING that you get to take so much time to be with your daughter!
I thought the same thing about breastfeeding. I gained close to 40 pounds, which is why I'm still holding onto a few extra pounds. I think I was down to 137 at 12 weeks when I returned to work. Then I panicked and joined Weight Watchers online to mix things up and lost 5 pounds in like a week on their plan. Then I sort of fell of the Weight Watchers wagon (ha) and a few weeks later still managed to lose another 5 or so without trying. I feel like the pregnancy weight is weird like that. It's odd about coming off, but it will come off.
That's great that you signed up to run NYC again! I'm ashamed to admit that I think I've only run 26 miles total since getting pregnant. My schedule is total crap and I feel so guilty leaving the little man on the weekends to run since I don't see him much during the week. But you inspired me to suck it up and sign up for a half in the fall (which I just did). Now I have to find the time to run. (That sounds so bad... I really want to find the time to run. I miss it so much).

Hey! I tried to respond to you like 3 times this weekend but got stopped by a grabby and/or no longer napping baby. Congratulations on your baby girl! Are you going back to work soon or do you have more time off? 6 weeks postpartum was rough, but hang in there. It'll come off after you finally commit to buying pants in a larger size. :-) I'm pretty close to my pre-pregnancy weight and I'm wearing all my old clothes, but man, I'm soooo soft and squishy. I still haven't figured out how to balance life, family, work, exercise, and planning out what I eat. And my baby's a year next week. How's it all going for you?
