Well, I'm about to turn 40 and I've been putting off getting back in shape and getting healthier for a long time. So, it's time for me to do something important for myself. I didn't have a weight problem growing up and was pretty happy with my weight until I was about 25. That's when I finished grad school and started working full time and I've gained 50 pounds since then. I kept thinking that I would eventually get serious about losing the weight but instead it kept creeping upward. My Dad died just before Thanksgiving 2006 from cancer and he was far too young. Since then, my Mom has been really focusing on getting healthier. She's lost a good bit of weight and is putting me to shame. :-) She keeps reminding me that this is not about how I look (though what woman doesn't want to look great again!) but that we need to take care of our health so we can be around as long as possible. I need to remember that God did not give us this temple to misuse and abuse it!

Any and all support will be greatly appreciated!

I recently read this excerpt from a poem in one of the Sparkpeople articles. It's something I need to remember to help get back on track whenever I slip up or things don't go as planned (because that's forever a part of life). ---

"Finish each day
And be done with it.
You have done what you could.
Some blunders and
Absurdities have crept in.
Forget them as soon as you can." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

My Goals:
I'm pretty short so considering that and my weight I would like to lose about 46 pounds. I want to tone up my body, keep my cholesterol in check and feel younger. People say I look young for my age so I should feel that way too!

My Program:
I'm trying to eat reasonable meals (by staying in the calorie range suggested by Sparkpeople) but with my own meal plan. I'm also gradually adding exercise back into my lifestyle so that I don't get burned out - I've always HATED exercise, even when I was in much better shape.

Personal Information:
I'm a southern girl and we certainly love our food! I love to cook! I'm the eldest child in my family and making good food for family (and friends) when I'm with them makes me feel like I'm taking care of them. So, I've learned to cut down on cooking my southern favorites and I know that being able to prepare healthier meals is something I have complete control over and is important if I'm going to succeed on this journey.
