I haven't been on Spark People for quite a few months. I was surprised to see all the people I'd corresponded with on the right column when I logged on.
After my long tortured route (it seemed like) to my last weigh in, I went up from there. I just was busy with trips to parents, in-laws, camp, preparing for a garage sale (we apparently have an enormous amount of stuff) and life in general. I kept edging up my weight until come November, I'd gained back all that I'd lost last Spring. I'd given up ever thinking I'd truly be thin again. I just wanted to stop all the gaining. I thought if I could just at least get things back down into the 130's, I'd feel good. Or maybe I'd settle for the low 40's. Most of my adult life, I was 121. I didn't start having kids until I was 30, so that helped. But, if I went up a few pounds, I just counted calories or cut back and I'd be back down there. After the first two children (I gained an enormous 50 pounds with the first and 45 with the second), I DID manage, through counting calories to get back down to 121. Then, after my 3rd child (I gained 42), I just didn't have the time to do all that counting, or the willpower. I made it back down ONE time to 130. I even dipped to 129 for ONE day. Then, I was straight back up until for years now, I've only briefly seen the 130's here and there. I've mostly battled the ups and downs of the 140's reaching to a high of 155 a couple of years ago.
This last November I was talking to a friend at work and she said I shouldn't despair of being back to my old weight. She had done Atkins and gotten back down to her high school weight in about 6 months or so. Wow. I remembered last spring having worked out morning and evening and counted calories every day only to lose 8 pounds in about 10 weeks! I decided to give it a try and began at 148lbs. somewhere around the 10th of November. I stayed as true as I could until the week before December, never moving on past the Induction phase because I didn't think my losses were as high as others seemed to report. I got down to 139. Then, because I was staying with other families for a week over the Christmas holidays, I decided to go off the diet and just try to not each much in the way of starches and carbs. I gained back 4 pounds in about 3 weeks. I had held off going back on Atkins at that time because of what I'd been hearing about from my in-laws.
Last spring, my brother-in-law lost 50 pounds (!) on the HCG diet. I had heard about it from him and thought it was (A) too risky to think about putting HORMONES in your body and (B) impossible to only eat 500 calories a day. I just put that out of the realm of possibility for me. Then, at Thanksgiving I found out that my Mother-in-law was going on it. She began it the day after Thanksgiving. I figured I'd find out at Christmas that she had only lasted a few days on it. But, at Christmas I was surprised to find out that she loved it, said it was the easiest diet she'd ever been on and had lost 20 pounds! She went from 150 down to 130 in one month! Then, I found out my sister-in-law was on it too. She ended up getting down to her teenage daughter's weight! I think she did a month and a half. She had lost 15 in one month when I saw her at Christmas and she looked thin enough, I figured she was done. She went another couple weeks and got down to where SHE had been most of her adult life.
I decided to check into it further. What I found out was that since they were doing the homeopathic HCG diet, there's very LITTLE HCG really in the solution. It works on some kind of water memory physiology. I've read the scientific article on this process (not relating to HCG, just water's ability to do this), but I wouldn't be able to reproduce it. So, the solution that the small amount of HCG is in is able to act as HCG would in the body.
Here's the story of HCG - it's the hormone that women produce when they're pregnant. This hormone is responsible for taking the fat out of your ABNORMAL fat supply and giving it to the baby. It doesn't take the normal fat that you're supposed to have. Your body knows to protect both the Mother AND the baby. If you're not really pregnant and you have the HCG in your system, it takes the fat out of your cells and you eliminate it with the waste. When you're on this diet and taking this supplement, you are releasing 1500 - 2000 calories of fat into your system each day. Then, you eat another 500 calories of protein and vegetables with just a tiny bit of starch.
Once you lose all you want to lose or all your body will let you (Once you deplete the abnormal fat, the HCG quits working), you go off the HCG and enter Phase 3 where you add back in everything except Sugars and Starches for 3 weeks. Then you slowly add those back in.
The great thing about this is that you actually stabilize your body at this new weight! Most people do not gain the weight back. If they do, they can usually point to not following the protocol by adding sugar and starches back in too early or just not following the instructions.
Your body resets itself at the new weight. Our bodies try to stay at a stable weight, that's why when we count calories and reduce, it's so easy to shoot right back up to where we were before. We become more hungry as our body tries to get back to the old weight. This resets the hypotholamus to the new weight. In fact, during Phase 3, you're encouraged to eat between 2000-3000 calories a day. That way your body feels that's the amount of calories needed to maintain the weight you are. Even if you're 120 pounds. If you don't do this and you try to eat a low calories diet during Phase 3, you'll have to maintain that amount of calories the rest of your life or you will gain.
I know this sounds like it couldn't possibly be true!! I thought the EXACT same thing until I saw it work in 3 family members. Now there are 3 other family members doing this, all with the same results!
I began the 500 calorie phase of the diet at 145 pounds on January 4, 2010. It's January 23 today and I weighed in at 131.2. That's a total of 14 pounds in 19 days. The average weight loss for a woman on this is .5 to .75 pounds a day.
The program is in either a 23 day round or a 40 day round of the low calorie eating and the HCG. Then you do 3 weeks of Phase 3 and on to Phase 4. Many people on the forum I'm on have done 2 or 3 rounds to get all the weight off. Many have lost 50 - 100 pounds on this! The short amount of time on the HCG also made me more comfortable with doing this. I also looked up what normal pregnancy levels of HCG are and the amount in the homeopathic and it's a negligible amount compared to pregnancy.
So, enough with my rant. I'm just so excited to actually look good in jeans again and I'm looking forward to summer. I just wanted to share my good fortune.
