SODIUM INTAKE INCREASES STROKE RISK In the United States, stroke is the fourth leading cause of death. The CDC reports that nearly eight hundred thousand people suffer a stroke each year and most of them survive but often with serious consequences. At least half of all stroke patients are left permanently disabled with paralysis, speech difficulties, memory loss, enormous medical expenses and emotional problems. It is also a fact that 9 out of 10 Americans eat too much sodium mainly from processed food whether from the grocery store or restaurants. The CDC presents strong evidence that eating too much sodium raises blood pressure and high blood pressure is the most important modifiable factor for stroke. So keep up your daily exercise and healthy eating to keep your blood pressure low and risk of stroke reduced.
DON’T GO FOR MUSCLE SORENESS Muscle soreness is not an accurate gage of whether you have had a good workout or not. After you have exercised, the next day you may not feel anything or you may have “muscle awareness”. But if your muscles are really sore, that’s not good, not only physically, but mentally also. Being sore has many factors such as how much stress you have been under, how much sleep you have had, how your eating is going, etc. So scoring your workout on how sore you are is counter productive. I am asking you to work out every day but if you push yourself too hard one day and are so sore that you can’t work out the next day – that’s not a good thing. Exercise should be pleasant and productive. I want you to exercise the rest of your life. Working out does not have to be uncomfortable to be effective. Be consistent, get a great workout in and enjoy!

YOUR WORKOUT PERSONALITY Is it is better to work out by yourself or to exercise with a workout partner? It really depends on your personal preference and what your workout personality is. Fitness Magazine polled its readers and found that seventy four percent liked to exercise alone. They preferred to workout with zero distractions. Fourteen percent liked group exercise classes where they could be social butterflies. And then there were twelve percent who enjoyed exercising with a gym buddy – just one person that they worked out with. Personally, I like to workout solo when I am doing my weight workout each day. I like to concentrate on my form and I enjoy the alone time, but when it comes to cardio work, I prefer to workout with someone else. Engaging in a good conversation really makes the time go by faster for me. Find out your workout personality and what works best for you.
KNOW YOUR WAIST CIRCUMFERENCE When it comes to your health, it’s important to stay on top of your numbers. You need to know what your cholesterol numbers are along with your blood sugar and blood pressure. Another number that’s vital to be aware of is your waist circumference. Abdominal fat not only looks bad, but more importantly, it is criminal because it may release excess fatty-acids or hormones that encourage inflammation which are dangerous to your arteries. The fatty-acids can contribute to insulin problems and plaque build-up. Keeping excess body fat at a minimum is important, but it is essential to keep fat off of your belly. Measure your waist circumference to be sure it is below 35 inches. Be diligent to exercise daily and eat good, healthy, low fat foods to keep all excess body fat at bay.
