I'm committed to making a permanent lifestyle change. The benefits of eating really healthfully and exercising extend way beyond just losing the weight that needs to come off. Longevity, freedom from disease, mental clarity into old age..those are some great goodies that go along with the weight loss.
For myself, I follow Dr. Joel Fuhrman's Eat to Live plan. This is a high nutrient density, whole foods way of eating. His recommendations are to try to eat daily:
1 pound raw vegetables, especially leafy greens
1 pound cooked vegetables, especially leafy greens
1 or more cups beans
at least four servings of fruit
1 ounce nuts and seeds
1 tbsp. ground flaxseed
up to 1/2 avocado
no more than 1 cup cooked whole grains
no sugar, no more than 200 mg. added salt
These are goals to shoot for and I don't usually match up perfectly, but when I do get closer to it, I lose more weight and I definitely feel better.
My husband and son are meat eaters (I've been vegetarian for 10 years) and though Dr. Fuhrman does allow up to 12 ounces of animal producrs a week, that doesn't seem enough to them at all. For them, I'm trying to add in as many vegetables and fruit as I can. My husband needs to lose a good bit of weight, my son needs to gain a good bit of weight so trying to feed everyone what they need/want is quite a challenge!
Aside from losing a lot of weight, I want to be much healthier in general. I plan on living a long, healthy life and so far I haven't done the best job always of directing myself down that path. Time to head in the right direction.
I want to go back to following Eat to Live.
