I am a novelist and loving it

My screen name is Porkchop (biker name). I got this name many years ago when I was obese. I have lost 100 pounds over about 20 years.

My wife, Mary, and I are both bikers and pilots.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: How many diets have you been on?

A: I'm not sure. When I came out of the Navy in the 70's, I weighed 265 pounds and at 6 foot tall, that was just too much. I got out of breath walking across a room and I had to go to special clothing stores to find my 54 inch pants. Here are the diets I remember:

1. Stillman Diet in the early 70's - This is when I found out I couldn't drink a lot of water. It upset my stomach somehow and I got terrible acid-indigestion from it. I didn't last long on this diet. (Much later I discovered green tea. I currently drink about 6 cups a day.)

2. Atkins Diet in the late 70's - I lost about 35 pounds on this diet, but probably gained back 25 of it.

3. Beverly Hills Diet in the early 80's - All I remember is I ate a lot of fruit and lost about 20 pounds but gained back about 10 of it.

4. Kelp, Vinegar and Lecithin Diet in the early 80's - I ate the kelp and vitamin supplements and probably lost about 35 pounds and gained back 20 of it.

5. Greg Smith 1000 calories a day diet - I made this one up myself, but I lost 40 pounds and gained back about 30 of it.

6. Weight Watchers in the early 90's - I lost about 40 pounds and gained back about 30 of it.

7. Atkins Diet in 2004 - Again! I lost about about 30 pounds and gained back about 20.

8. Weight Watchers in 2006 - Again! I lost about 35 pounds.

9. Alternate Day diet - I have been able to maintain my current weight for the last 8 months using this method. It works quite well.

It has been a long road, but I finally feel I have this weight thing under control and my weight is right where it ought to be.

Q: How many motorcycles have you owned?

A: 18 and I have fond memories of each of them. Here they are:

1. '62 Vespa 125cc scooter - blue. My dad bought me this one while I was in high school. I took it to Ohio State when I started there. Top speed 45 mph.

2. '66 Ducati 350cc - red *new*. I rode this at Ohio State and it was my first real motorcycle. I rode it through two Ohio winters. Brrrr!

3. '70 Honda CB350 - blue. I was in the Navy. It was the most reliable machine I ever had. When the outside temperature got down to zero, it was the only vehicle I had that would start. I didn't want to ride it through the Virginia winters, but I had to.

4. '69 Yamaha 650 - black. Rode this one in the Navy too. A knockoff of the Triumph Bonneville - a vertical twin.

I got out of the Navy moved to California and was without a motorcycle for a few years, then:

5. '79 Yamaha 550 Sebring - red *new*. This was my first in-line 4. Also the first machine I ever owned with no kick-start. I was very impressed with the smoothness and how it handled. A beautiful machine! My neighbor borrowed it one day and wrecked it.

6. '84 Honda 750 Nighthawk - black. My wife drove this one. Very powerful machine.

7. '92 Honda 250 Nighthawk - black *new*. My wife drove this one also. She wanted something smaller.

8. '90 Yamaha 750 Virago - black. A nice machine. It handled well.

9. '92 Yamaha 1100 Virago - black. Very powerful! I put Vance-Hines pipes on it, and you knew you were on a motorcycle when you fired it up.

10. '95 Harley 1340cc Electra-Glide FLH - black. It was beautiful with all its gleaming fiberglass; cannisters, fairing, tour-pack. I put about 50,000 miles on it, then one night I ran off the road and totaled it! I broke my back and thought for a while I would never walk again, but everything came out okay and I am riding and flying again. I have a dull back ache all the time, but I have learned how to cope with it. My doctors said I am very lucky.

11. '02 Yamaha 1600cc Road Star - red *new*. What a sexy machine! Big and powerful and very comfortable on long rides. I put Vance Hines long shot pipes on this one and gave it a nice deep rumble.

12. '04 Suzuki 1000cc GXR - blue *new*. Holy cow!! What a rocket sled!! Now I know what it's like to be fired out of a canon. This thing had 150 horses and weighed 389 pounds! A true superbike. Kind of uncomfortable for cruising though.

13. '04 Honda 1100cc Shadow Saber - purple flame *new* . My wife rode this one. What can I say? She loves Hondas! She let me drive it though. Nice machine.

14. '06 Suzuki 400cc Burgman - blue *new*. My wife traded the Shadow for this one. This is a far cry from my old Vespa scooter. It has way more power and a fully automatic transmission. It is also fuel injected so no choke. It is effortless to drive and gets about 65 mpg!

15. '08 Yamaha 1300cc Royal Star Venture - black cherry *new*. I bought this one so we could ride two-up on trips. It is a posh touring machine with a beautiful ride, CB radio and a four speaker stereo system. It has a very smooth V-four but is kind of heavy (860 pounds) for every day use, so...

16. '08 Harley 1200cc Sportster - red *new*. I bought this one just for an every day runabout. It is perfect for that. It is light, fast and very nimble. I love it!

17. '09 Harley Super Glide. I traded the Sportster when I saw the price on this Super Glide - $9999! I have never driven a twin cam before. What a smooth ride! It is a little heavier than the Sportster, but a higher top end with the 6 speed gear box.

18. '06 Harley Ultra Classic. I bought this one for the wife and I.
We can both ride in comfort on this heavy cruiser. It is fully loaded...4 speaker stereo, CB radio, Cruise Control, etc.

In our garage right now are the HD Super Glide, and the HD Ultra Classic. I think we are done buying and trading motorcycles for a while. Life is good!

Okay, PORKCHOP, thank you for the Scoot "Goodie" and please do not be so invisible within the Harley Women and Men Team. I don't know if you read my SPARK page but I retired from the U.S. Coast Guard in 1979 and my weight started to climb way to high and I am only 6 feet.

Hi Martha! I just uploaded a few pictures of the Harley trike project. I have wasted a lot of time waiting for parts, but I am working on it again now. But I have another bike to ride, so it is not so bad. emoticon
