Hoping that slow and steady wins the race

My name is Tina and I live in Freehold, NJ. Up until a few years ago, I didn't really think about my weight as a major problem in my life. I guess I was in denial. I thought that my jeans were shrinking in the wash, not that I was gaining significant weight.

My name is Tina and I live in Freehold, NJ. Up until a few years ago, I didn't really think about my weight as a major problem in my life. I guess I was in denial. I thought that my jeans were shrinking in the wash, not that I was gaining significant weight.

Last year, after watching yet another episode of the Biggest Loser eating a whole bag of chips, I went and joined Jenny Craig the next day. I started back at the gym and lost 60 lbs. Then I lost my job, and fell into a depression. I couldn't afford to purchase the food from Jenny Craig.

I stopped going to the gym as much and I started making exceptions to my food plan. Then I got a job for which I had a 1 hour commute, yet another excuse for not going to the gym. Well, all that led to me gaining some of the weight back. I was still being somewhat careful about what I ate. I was still parking far away, so I had to walk a little more.

Then my father was diagnosed with liver cancer and cerrosis of the liver. We knew that was a deadly combination, and the doctors told us the cancer had progressed to a point for which there were no treatment options other than pain management. He died 4 weeks later. After that all bets were off as far as me doing anything to maintain my current weight or losing any.

I gained most of it back, so I am trying Spark People again and trying to get my mind in the right place to move forward. I am hoping to get some cheerleaders and some people to set me straight on my habits. I need a lot of help. I am starting with a smaller goal, lose 50 lbs. I really need to lose 100 lbs, but I am trying to prevent a defeatist attitude by trying a slow and steady pace that will ultimately lead me to my bigger goals.

I found the AFTER A WHILE poem when I was a young woman; It was during one of the most difficult times in my life. I was at a craft fair and someone had written it in caligraphy. I bought it and framed it . The line that touches me most is 'plant your own garden and decorate your soul'. I've tried to do that ever since.
