I've been tracking my daily deficit & making sure it is not less than 500 & it shouldn't be more than 1000. To do this you take your RMR(resting metabolic rate)+ calories burned - calories consumed=your daily deficit. To find your RMR you can go to www.healthstatus.com/calculate/cbc You should re-calculate for about every 10 pounds you lose.
