As for abs, I think it was the cardio that really helped it along. They started showing when I started walking everyday and became more firm when I started running; I'm assuming the amount of work it takes to hold me up during those times were the almost equivalent to crunches! At any rate, the more fat (not necessarily pounds) I lost, the more they showed. I only started crunches much after you could see the abs.
Arms, hmm. Have you looked into the 100 Push Up program? That program helped me TREMENDOUSLY, in combination of losing fat (again, not necessarily pounds). The only downside is that the program ends, so after the program, you'll have to maintain the arms with probably other dumbell work. Since I went off the program, my arms haven't looked the same, but I just might go back to it because I miss my arms!
