One day at a time

I am a mother of two wonderful boys, Brayden and Gavin. Until recently I would have said my life was near perfect. I was pursuing my dream of going to medical school and was attending my first year of classes. My husband's construction business was growing. My boys were bright and active. I had a great group of friends. Then on 5-13-11 my life came to a crashing halt. My youngest son who was suffering from headaches for two weeks was diagnosed with a brain tumor. On 5-16-11 he underwent a 10 hour surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible. The surgeon was only able to remove 70% of the mass. The tumor was sent for analysis and we were told we should have the results by the end of the week. On 5-20-11 we were delivered the hardest blow who could ever receive. We were told our son has a grade 4 glioblastoma. Due to the location all of the tumor could not be removed. The average life span after diagnosis is 1 to 2 years, and that is after receiving chemo and damaging radiation. Now our family is on the quest for a experimental treatment to extend his life. We are preparing to move across the country to Houston TX for his treatment that starts next week. I have to postpone my dream and my husband has to move and rebuild his business. But everyday we have our precious boy is a gift.
This experience has taught me to enjoy life day by day. The cliche sayings of "you aren't promised tomorrow", "everyday is a gift", and "live life to the fullest" are very true. I was always the one with a plan and three or four backup plans in case the first plan didn't work. Now I life in a constant state of uncertainty. But it has taught me what is important in life. It's not the nice cars, the big house, the perfect size. It's the smile on your child's face and the memories you remember forever.

I was sharing Braydens story with my 6 year old son who is high functioning autistic. He asked if he could draw Brayden a picture to make him smile. I woulkd love to encourage this kindness in my own boy and hopefully be able to give a smile to yours. If there's a PO Box or something where I can have him send a card please let me know. My son is too young to know this but my GOD son died a few years before he was born, his name was Daniel. He was about to turn 6 and had an inoperable brain tumor. Your story has touched my heart. Anything that I can do I want to.
