It's better to try than not try. So I'm taking my health initiative more seriously without having goals so big they can never be reached. I'm fifty, an empty-nester, and an avid reader. I used to have so many sparkpeople friends, and most, if not all, aren't here any more.

My husband and I started using 5:2 intermittent fasting in April. So far, I have lost ten pounds, and he has lost thirty. I have not been as diligent about sticking to 500 calories on the fasting days (we're doing MWF, three days instead of two), but have ended up eating 750-1000 three days a week, which is more manageable.

We do not "eat whatever we want" on non-fasting days; rather, we stick to smaller portions and only occasionally have alcohol or small desserts. I try to stay under my SP calorie plan those non-fasting four days a week when possible, and I'm walking several mornings a week. Together, we're modifying our past eating habits and feel much better as a result. You know one of the best outcomes? We know we're eating salad for dinner three nights a week and I don't have to come up with a meal. That's liberating.

My long-long term goal is to reach the 170s.


My Program:
We're trying a variation on intermittent fasting. Three days a week, we're eating much lower calorie counts (under 900) and I don't eat any meat those days, either. The other days, we're still mindful (I try to stay under 1600), but we eat normal meals and might go out and might have a cocktail a couple of times a week. It's not true fasting, but it's a way to reduce intake without being miserable all week long.

    Congratulations on the new job, and editing fiction, that's cool! Hopefully it's less stress too.

    I went "all in" with changing my eating. Just trying to add veggies and fruits didn't work for me, so I decide to eat them for two meals a day and nothing else. It's amazing how much that makes me eat but it's all healthy stuff. It made me look at my meals a whole different way, new foods, new prep, and that seems to be working for me. Now if I can just get below my year-long plateau number.... We'll see.

    Let's keep checking in and see how we're doing, OK?

    I agree with the comment on my page that we could "lose a good chunk of weight in 4 months". I am starting with 40 days because (a) it sounded do-able and (2) it ends on my birthday, so I can reward myself with something really nice (present + reward). Come on, join me, we can push and pull each other along!

    Hey, it was good to hear from you and I love your new profile pic, you look great! I've been on SP but not doing very sensational for the summer. Too much going on with work and family dramas. It's mostly sorted out now, so I am going to concentrate on myself for a while and see if I can't shift another 10 pounds off. Hope springs eternal!
