Learning to live a healthy life style

I joined SparkPeople about 3 months ago. I had already begun my journey to a healthier life style a few years back. I have always tended to be on the thin side. Because I am tall (5'11" and small framed people usually think I am thinner than I really am. I have always been a walker - walking 3-4 miles almost daily, but did not eat has healthy as I should have. About 20 months ago I decided I wanted to begin running (at the age of almost 55!) I joined SparkPeople about 3 months ago. I had already begun my journey to a healthier life style a few years back. I have always tended to be on the thin side. Because I am tall (5'11" and small framed people usually think I am thinner than I really am. I have always been a walker - walking 3-4 miles almost daily, but did not eat has healthy as I should have. About 20 months ago I decided I wanted to begin running (at the age of almost 55!) My boss was preparing to do her first triathlon. I figured if she could do that, I could at least learn to run a mile! It was hard for me. I had never run a mile in my life - not even in school. I got an app called Couch to 5K and started working on it. After about 3 months, I was finally able to do it and then ran my first 5k in May 2010. In October of 2010 I did my first 1/2 marathon.

In May of 2011 I ran in my second 5K - beating the first time by 3 minutues! I also got my daughter in law to run with me. This was her 1st 5k. She felt wonderful after and plans on doing it again. Over the past 18 months I have begun making better choices and eating better - not all of the time, but at least 80% of the time. I have dropped 18 pounds and dropped 1 size - almost ready to drop one more size, but need to tone up the belly area before I will be able to do that.

These days I hike with friends, go biking and walk or run every day. I have been debating participating in a duathlon - run - bike - run, but haven't yet felt like I was ready for that. I am working on preparing for my next 1/2 marathon and need to work on doing more strength training and not just walking and running. I get support from co-workers and try to get others to lead more healthy life styles, but find that difficult. So many have too many excuses, so I will just keep on trying....

Thank you so very much for reading and commenting on my blog, Loving Yourself: My Body Pledge of Allegiance, and for signing on by leaving a comment, and taking the pledge to be your own champion!

I feel more strongly than ever that this is indeed the first hurdle we must conquer. Because of all the positive feedback I have received during this series from those who have been reading and following, I am going to continue with helping not only myself, but those who have committed via this pledge made to themselves to do that with more blogs on this topic. I am confident that we can move forward from here. This was the first step off the starting line. Let's move forward together! I do hope you will stop by to read and to follow the Loving Yourself bogs as the series continues.

Many fellow Spark Friends have already committed to and taken the Body Pledge of Allegiance, and more are joining each day. These small actions can make a big difference. It is about coming together and offering our strength to one another. Together we are uniting our conviction, and echoing the voices of ourselves, and for women and girls everywhere to love ourselves as we are, no matter where we are. It is the energy of the this conviction and the movement that will propel us all forward into becoming who we wish to truly be, and ultimately, to achieving all that we are striving to achieve, not only here, but in our lives.

Let's “Spark a mini revolution of loving ourselves”! Together we can do it!
