Hello,

My name is Nickie. I'm 38 years old and have been struggling with my weight for the last 15 years (or so). Some of it has been lack of motivation and some of it has been health related. I've realized that feeling better will come through weight loss.

I'm struggling with chronic migraine headaches and during the past year had a bout with congestive heart failure. A medication I was using for my migraines caused mitral valve regurgitation making it difficult to breathe. Stopping the medication has mostly fixed the problem - I still have a slight heart murmur.

We've also been trying to have a baby for the past year and have found out that my weight and lack of fitness maybe making that difficult. My hormones are out of balance and I may have developed polycystic ovary syndrome. Through my research I have found that this can be caused by obesity. As a women gets heavier she becomes insulin resistant. One of the most effective treatments is to lose weight, exercise regularly, and eat a low carbohydrate diet.

As a result, this is where I'm starting. I'm hoping that by losing weight I will feel better overall and possibly get pregnant. Regardless of whether we have a baby, my length and quality of life will be much better at a lower rate.

I love reading. It's one of those tough things when you're trying to lose weight. I would always prefer to read a good book than go for a walk. I have found a way around this - audiobooks. One can often see me walking around with my headset and mp3 player listening to an audiobook.

I slo like painting, dancing, swimming, and learning.

You are a far nicer person then I am. If a doctor had made comments to me such as the ones made to you, one of us wouldn't have been walking out of that room! How rude can doctors possibly be?! It sounds like your migraines are pretty rough. Mine, when they get bad enough, cause me to be physically ill. I will throw up every time I move. Lights bother me and I have issues with noise when I have a migraine. You know that feeling your skin gets when someone drags their fingers on a chalk board? My entire body will feel like that times 10! I'm pretty sure you can't "just work through it" as one doctor suggested to you. For my migraines I take Amitriptyln and Maxalt. The Amitriptyln is to control them and the Maxalt is for an attack. I am going to have to see if either cause heart issues. I guess I've never really thought about the side effects of any drugs before! Good luck with everything!

Welcome to the Swimming for Cardio team! Congratulations on making the committment to better your health. Getting all of your hormones in line and getting your insulin resistance under control are really important, so I applaud you on taking this path. Since you are a reader, you might enjoy the site lef.org, then look under health concerns or research. They have a wealth of information.

I have pretty serious autoimmune issues as well as chemical imbalance issues, so I understand your plight. I have to constantly work at being in balance and it can be a real struggle. Add to that the weight that you'll need to work off and you've got a difficult road to travel. Just remember that we're here to help you on this journey. I think it's a huge help to know you are not alone.
