WW can also be great for motivation, but some people get really down when they have a week without a loss and then have to report it as well. A lot depends on the individual WW group, I think.
As to what foods are low carb... Most of the time the simplest way to know if something is low carb or not is to consider whether it's processed at all. Low carb is whole, real food, with generally minimal processing (washing, chopping, pressing, heating/cooking, but not hydrogenation, refining, milling, etc). So that immediately eliminates:
Sugar Flour Packaged food
When you start out you do also have to stay away from a few "whole foods" that are higher in carbs:
Potatoes Grains, even whole ones Most dairy Alcohol (It technically can be low carb, but the alcohol content itself is processed like carbs, so you have to stay pretty low on it)
A low carb way of eating (for weight loss) is generally from 20g-75g of carbs per day (that's only 80-300 calories from carbohydrate) and all of those carbs should come from good sources of nutrition, especially veggies.
