on Day 1 of quitting smoking!! Woo hoo!
Your status said you were wondering why you are hacking up a lung? Here comes Nurse Grace to answer your question! I answer this probably 3 times a week at my job!
When you smoke, all the smoke and nasty chemicals in them paralyze these little hairs/fibers in your lungs called cilia. These cilia are responsible for assisting us to cough up phlegm and other foreign debris in our airways.
Now, because smoking long term does cause these little guys to get paralyzed and not function properly, tar and other buildup occurs in your airway. Since you've stopped smoking, the cilia are waking up and looking around at "Holy crap! When did all this junk get here!?" and are working hard to clear it up, now that they can move again.
Fun fact! Within a few weeks you will notice you cough everything up and cough consistently, but it will die down.
Keep up the awesome work!! One day at a time! 1464 days ago
I am so sorry to hear you had a rough time. I am very lucky I have not had any issues, so far, (knocking on wood here). If all goes well I will be home for lunch. He did warn me to stay clear of the deep fried, fatty, rich foods or at least know where the bathrooms are....LOL He was really kind and said with the healthy choices I have been making it should be easy for me to keep making them.
I am right there with you get this stupid organ out.
