It's About Time

I have been overweight for about 30 years. (Overweight is the nice term. Morbidly obese is more accurate.) I had knee replacement surgery in December of 2010 which was not successful. I had nothing but pain for 20 months. I did NOT want to have the knee redone, so I decided that maybe if I lost 50 pounds, that would reduce the stress on my knee enough to not need to re-do the surgery.

I had nothing but pain for 20 months. I did NOT want to have the knee redone, so I decided that maybe if I lost 50 pounds, that would reduce the stress on my knee enough to not need to re-do the surgery.

So, starting in January of 2012 I started journaling all of my food and counting calories as a way to permanently change the way I eat. By June I had lost 50 pounds, but it didn't make any difference in my knee, so on August 7, 2012, I had the knee replaced again.

I don't know if they just did the procedure correctly this time or if the 60 pounds I had lost by the time of the surgery made the difference or what, but this recovery has been a totally different experience. Four weeks after surgery I am back at work, I've lost 6 more pounds and my knee is feeling really good.

I am now onto my second goal of losing another 50 pounds and after that, 20 more to get to my goal weight. That will be a total loss of 130 pounds. I have lost 66, so I am about 1/2 way there. I feel so much better, and I find that sparkpeople.com is a great companion to me on my journey. I have even found some exercise videos on the site that I can do, so I am starting to add exercise to my plan, too.

Hi Nancy! Thanks for commenting on my blog. I weighed myself a couple of days before I started my streak on March first. I did not weigh myself again until August 13, when I started a team challenge. At that time I'd lost 65 lbs. The challenge ended three weeks later, and so I weighed again and had lost 6 more lbs for a total of 71. But I'm not going to weigh myself again until New Years day.
