Picking up the pace

I'm a genderqueer stepmum cyclist who is cardiovascularly pretty fit, but also carrying a fair amount of ballast around with me. I used to cycle long distances in a day pretty regularly but have stopped after life got a bit hectic, and am hoping to increase my speed (which means losing some of that ballast!) and .

I commute by pushbike and one of the various nerdy cyclist things I do is try to improve my commute time (within legal road limits) over a 5 mile trip (currently my PB is an average speed of 33kph/20mph). Because of my interest in endurance riding I'm also working towards pulling up my average speed over longer distances (recently completed 48km at 27.7kph, which was quite an achievement for me).
