Maintaining a Healthy Senior Lifestyle

I am coming up on my 3rd “Sparkiversary” having officially “joined” on March 8,2010. I thought it was time to update my Spark page.

When I initially joined , I was looking for an easy way to keep track of calories. I have had a life long struggle with weight - and was yet on another quest to get my weight under control and exercise back into my life.

I had a professor in college that called this yo-yo dieting approach “the Rhythm method of girth control”.. and I must confess that I had been practicing this method for years. I was trying to break out of the cycle!!

I must admit that I didn’t appreciate all the benefits of Spark and stopped using it soon after I joined. Nine months later my daughter redirected my attention to the site with a Blog she had written about me. She also shared how the site was helping her to successfully loose weight. She inspired me to give the site another look and helped me learn about how to use it. It was a wonderful gift and I have been “sparking “ ever since! The site helps me stay accountable to myself and the goals I set for myself. The support of Spark Friends and the Spark community keep me motivated and involved providing support to others.

I was fortunate to have two weight loss programs at work that got me started on the way to a healthier life style - the first one was called Change for Life and began Sept 2009 ( I lost 17 # ) and the second one was called “Get Real” , it was during this time that I “ Got Spark” and haven’t turned back.

This January I celebrated my birthday and I attained the goal I had set for myself 2 years ago- I wanted to be 150 # by the time I was sixty five and I have done that!! Woo Hoo!!! The second part of the goal “maintain this weight for the rest of my life” will be an ongoing process. I am determined to break out of the cycle of the Rhythm Method of Girth control. I want to maintain my healthy senior lifestyle and continue to hike, snow shoe, cross country ski, cycle, garden and build rock walls for many years to come.

Hi Peggy,

Don't every worry about getting back to me at a later date. I TRULY understand because I myself am pretty behind right now! Don't let yourself go any further into old habits because they just aren't worth it! I know because I am still getting out from under from the winter. I lost some of the weight I regained but I hate going backwards and not forwards! Anyway, I have found my way back and plan on reaching my goal weight this year!

I hope your stress levels lessen and you are able to resume your normal way of control. I know you can do it and that you have the discipline and desire to move forward! I'll be there rooting for you the whole way!!!!

Thanks for the sunshine goodie Peggy. It really helped give me a beautiful weekend. It was 80 degrees today. Now Starting tomorrow, it is dropping again. They say it will struggle to get into the 40's for the rest of the week. It's always a surprise with Mother Nature. I hope your week is healthy and happy. ((Hugs)) Irene

Hi Peggy,

Thanks for stopping at my blog. I'm so glad that it struck a cord with you. Sometimes that is all we need to remind us something we already know but forgot or put on the back burner.

I always recycle, so thanks for correcting me when I said "just recycling". I think about all of the garbage dumping areas with plastic bottles that are not biodegradable and it makes me sad and angers me that everyone doesn't think the same way.

Hope you are going into a great weekend. The weather here is supposed to be sunny and in the low 70's! WooHoo!!! Can't wait.
