Hi I am Melissa and I live in Minneapolis, MN. I am on here to keep myself accountable and meet new spark peeps for motivation! If you're my buddy, get ready for some serious cheer leading! You are great and I will make that known!!!
Growing up I would use every excuse in the book to NOT participate in gym class, I had "asthma", I was tired, sick..blah blah blah. All reasons to avoid looking bad. Granted I was a child at the time so I give myself some grace with what happened however this behavior lurked into my adult lifestyle and choices I had about fitness and health.
Then tragedy struck...when I was around 20 years old I got in a major car accident. The van I was in flipped down a hill 3 times and we all got out in time before the van started on fire (I know, it was like a movie). We had three gas generators in the van.
It was a true miracle we were all alive and well after the accident. Thereafter I was able to get physical therapy and it was within physical therapy I started to learn about the body. I was fascinated and completely hooked on the body's ability to heal itself and to be strong!
As I got better, I started to learn more about nutrition and working out so I got a job at a gym part time. This was also the time when I joined Weight Watchers so my life was in for a whole new meaning. I lost 25lbs and became a fitness rock star!
As the years went by I did some cardio here and there and some weight lifting here and there but never really challenged myself to move above and beyond. Then, in 2007 I started learning a lot about health and wellness through Jillian Micheal's website, her radio show, and The Biggest Loser. She started talking about organic foods on her radio show, sustainability, how precious our endocrine system is and how that effects our metabolism. I also learned about circuit training from her website and that really turned me into a strong woman!
So I branched out and started reading authors like Michael Pollen and I also got involved in shopping at Trader Joe's and going to Farmers Markets.
Also in 2007 I lost 15lbs and I won the summer challenge on Jillian's website. (I'll post the before and after pictures on here)
So for the past 10 years my journey with health and wellness has become a true and beautiful passion. I feel I am doing a disservice to this world by NOT doing this as a profession. I am currently taking classes to become certified as a Personal Trainer. I'd also like to become Spinning, Kettlebell and TRX certified. I truly believe if you are strong physically, that will gel into different areas of your life, like work and relationships. My long term goal is to own a health and fitness center.
Also, last year in October a drunk driver when through a stop sign and we t-boned. I was one week from a half marathon and I refused to believe I was as injured as I was. I just wanted to move on. But my body wasn't ready. Needless to say, since that accident occurred I've dealt with depression and really trying to be okay with where I am at physically. I use to be a power house at the gym, from doing ploy-metrics, to high intensity circuit trainings, running, spinning classes ect...to basically light walking after the accident. I have learned that it's not whether you get knocked down...it's whether you get back up. What matters is you push through the tears, you push through what you think is going to break you and you keep moving. I am a fighter. I am a warrior. I will also NOT settle for being a victim. Yes, the accident happened. Yes, my neck and back were mangled from the accident, but I will get stronger...I will get better.
Another area I struggle with is emotional eating. I also have some binge eating things I am working through. I know I am not alone so I am excited to be here to get support and give support.

•To loose 1-2lbs per week.
•To not binge eat.
• To journal my feeling everyday so I know what’s truly going on rather than eating to numb myself.
• To listen to my body if my neck hurts (car accidents) and back off.
Main goal: To look hot in a bikini and get to my goal weight of 140lbs.

Eating 3 meals and 1 snack daily, totaling 1,300-1,500 calories. Eating whole foods, clean and green. Working out 3-5 times a week. Mainly biking and swimming until my whiplash heals.
I use a small notebook to track my meals/calories and calorie burn. For me it's easier to use than tracking on Sparks. If you want a sample of my diet for the day...let me know!
~Jillian Michael's is my inspiration.
~ high intensity circuit training is a powerful way to shed excess weight and build muscle. (it's not the only way, but it's highly effective)
~My favorite forms of brutal cardio are Spinning classes, the step mill, and running.

That's great that WW is working so well for you! What I loved about it was that you could eat aaaanything and not feel bad! Haha, just adjust the points accordingly! :-P
& to keep my chocolate cravings under control, I bought Lindt 70% dark and Lindt dark + orange slices, and they are so rich I only need 1-2 squares to get rid of my sweet tooth! I've also been enjoying some of my fave fruits with a bit of yogurt, honey, and pecans! I'm trying to incorporate "super foods" into each meal, haha, to get rid of tummy fat :-D! We'll see how it goes!
As for vitamins, I bought a multi-vitamin, and also a Calcium + D supplement (I noticed that I didn't get enough calcium, and I don't want that to negatively impact me later)! I don't eat enough veggies, I admit, so the other vitamins are necessary! I mix spinach into smoothies and love bell peppers, but aside from those I don't nibble on them as often as I should! At least I love fruit! Haha
