I'm a 58 year old RN who returned to work three years ago after a 30 year hiatus (a very good decision on my part). Two years ago I took out a knee and am now in need of a knee replacement which I'll put off for a year or more (my knee hurts, but it doesn't stop me from much other than distance walking). I've gained a lot of weight as my usual walking routine abruptly ended due to the knee injury.

I am a faithful client at my fitness center- I have trained 3 times a week with a trainer for 8 years-primarily weight lifting. However, given my age and lack of aerobic exercise, I've managed to put on maybe 25 lbs. We on't ever eat fast food, I'm a very good cook and our meals are extremely healthy. Three weeks ago I started riding a stationary bike and am up to 45 minutes a day 5 days a week. I know what I should eat-it's not rocket science! I follow the plan very well- until after dinner. I find myself grazing in the evening- mostly low calorie ice cream bars, but eat enough of those and I sabotage my own program. I'm a carb addict. My main issue is how to deal with the evening grazing other than putting a padlock on the refrigerator. I have to stop doing physical things by evening as the knee has usually had enough by then and goes on strike so I am primarily sitting by then.

I am in recovery for other addictions and have 6 years sobriety now, but I just cannot get a handle on this one! It's not as if I can abstain from food. I need to get off this weight as I know the knee would hurt less with less weight, plus our youngest son- aged 30- is getting married in September and I'd really like to lose some weight (won't be able to avoid pictures this time). I have 5 months and could use some assistance with this one issue. Thanks for listening!!!
