The 1200-1400 calorie range is probably related to my age (64) and personal metabolism. But it's experience, frankly, that tells me: when I eat more, I put on weight. And beyond that, "simple carb" calories even within range seem to punch above their weight: pasta, white bread, mashed potatoes etc.
