My name is Melissa and I have a lot to accomplish in my life, starting with getting healthy!

As cliche and repetitive as it sounds, I've never really been a skinny girl, but I actually used to be somewhat healthy in high school. I've just recently found why I've gained so much weight in the past 8 years, and it took a while to realize why it was happening to me. Like a lot of people, things like parents getting a divorce, loved ones moving, the economy, college and other things ...
My name is Melissa and I have a lot to accomplish in my life, starting with getting healthy!

As cliche and repetitive as it sounds, I've never really been a skinny girl, but I actually used to be somewhat healthy in high school. I've just recently found why I've gained so much weight in the past 8 years, and it took a while to realize why it was happening to me. Like a lot of people, things like parents getting a divorce, loved ones moving, the economy, college and other things are all factors for why I've fallen. Instead of these things keeping me depressed, I looked for food and other comforts like trying to be the cool friend in college who buys everyone drinks and makes everyone else happy but herself. I got into financial debt because of this which made my depression even worse. I finished college because I had to and I didn't have any career goals and wasn't confident enough to find a real job.

I spent years working in different fields, trying to make a living with or without my degree...the economy made it worse. I gained over 80 pounds in a year after college and then some since. Off and on, I've tried to get back on track with diet and exercise, but something would hit me financially and put me right back to the beginning.

This past year was a turning point for me. I made the hardest decision of my life and started going back to school to become a Registered Nurse. I'm getting straight A's which is helping boost my confidence and I've been able to keep my finances under control. As a future nurse, I feel it's even more important to get healthy and fit and be a role model for others.

I'm so excited for this journey and I'm really hopeful that I will be able to find friends in the Spark community who can support me and who I can also support. God knows we all need it!

Personal Information:
I'm from Western New York State (yes, there is life outside the city! ) and lived close to Amish communities. Although I grew up in church, I went through college studying science and philosophy, so I question things a lot more. I feel guilty asking for help and support as I'd rather be the one to give, but I'm hoping to start asking more because I really need it! I love discussing topics about all religions and the afterlife as well as holistic/alternative healing.

I know how hard it can be to balance school work and real life. I just finished law school and often forgot to pay attention to what was good and healthy for me. When you literally spend 14 to 16 hours a day on campus (and usually the same building at that) thoughts of salads and the gym can fall to the wayside. My last semester though I finally forced myself into the gym habit for a break and it might have saved my sanity! Such a wonderful stress reliever and it often would lift the fog sitting on my brain after reading for hours. It also helped that I could watch an hour of mindless TV while on the treadmill or other cardio machines. Dont forget to take at least an hour to yourself! Your health and mental well being is certainly worth it!! emoticon

Hey Mel,

Just stopping in to see how you've been doing. I"ve been kicking ass on going to the gym and getting cardio in but St. Patricks day undermined my diet a bit. Just a weeeee bit. I see your in the BLC as well, we are technically competitors but Im glad to see you are in the challenge!! Best of Luck with it!!
