I'm a 38-year-old professional who has had a lifelong struggle with my weight. I wrestle with food intolerances and a coping mechanism that could easily be described as not coping. I joined SparkPeople for accountability to keep me on track.

FOOD ISSUES
My main problem diet-wise is a food intolerance to wheat and cow's milk, and to a lesser degree corn. My family didn't know about food allergies or intolerances in my childhood. So for a long time, a "healthy diet" included ...

FOOD ISSUES
My main problem diet-wise is a food intolerance to wheat and cow's milk, and to a lesser degree corn. My family didn't know about food allergies or intolerances in my childhood. So for a long time, a "healthy diet" included foods that aren't good for me. (Or my mom, for that matter, who found out much later on that she has celiacs.)

My food intolerances are not an excuse. I've known about my issues with wheat for nearly 15 years, though not the extent of my problem. It's not a severe allergic reaction that would warn you off of eating it ever again. My fingers swell and there is mild discomfort and bloating, but it's the long term effects that are hard to notice until you cut it out completely and realize how bad you were feeling. But at first I always think I can handle it in small amounts, or just for a treat, or I'll quit tomorrow. It's like a drug for me. That's why I'm tracking days without it.

COPING or MAYBE NOT
To make matters worse, when life gets tough or stressful or chaotic--as it often does--my routine falls apart and I cope by hibernating. I wall off the world to give myself time to deal with it. My eating habits and activity levels change. I revert to the diet of my childhood, because I don't have to think about it... and it's a "healthy diet" for the most part. Not junk food. But wheat and diary and corn creep into my diet. They make me feel lethargic and groggy and hungry all the time. I shut down--inside and out.

THE RESULT
It's an insidious transformation from health to sickness. I don't move as much, see my friends, dance as much, go for walks or look for things to do. My skin becomes problematic, my hair dull and my nails brittle. Then my seasonal allergies become unbearable, and I begin to get sinus infections and numerous little colds. I gain weight, a lot and fast. And I often don't realizing that this is happening until I'm stuck in the dumps and unrecognizable. It's like going into a food coma after a big meal, except it lasts for months or even a year at a time.

I'm a big believer that what you eat affects your mood, energy levels and appetite. It's hard to feel good about yourself or make a positive change when you're stuck in the cyclical pattern of eating food that's bad for your own individual body--whether it's dairy or eggs or nuts or wheat. Good foods for some people, but not for everyone.

WHY I'M HERE
I joined SparkPeople mainly for the accountability and insight from using the tracking tools for food and exercise. Counting calories is not as important to me (though, I understand you shouldn't eat too many), but tracking what I eat and how much I move is very important. When I avoid wheat, dairy and corn, the calories do seem to keep themselves under control and my energy levels are very high--especially since I don't like a lot of over-processed "gluten-free" junk foods.

Accountability is the key. I accept now that tracking food and activity--whether online or via some other tool--will be a lifelong assignment. The act of recording what I eat will help me keep wheat from creeping back into my diet. And tracking my activity/exercise will help me notice whether I've slipped into hibernation-mode before it's too late.

I miss doing the things I enjoy and wearing the clothes and shoes that I like. I look forward to getting my food allergies under control, shedding the extra pounds, and moving myself into a better state of mind and body.

My Goals:
Avoid wheat and corn; and avoid dairy eventually.

Since resisting wheat is sooo very difficult for me to do, I want to reward myself for being wheat-free: 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 1 year, 2 years, 5 years, 10 years, etc. I'm thinking of good rewards now so that I can make my goals more "official". Another tattoo, trip to NYC, "to-die-for" theater tickets, good-quality paint brushes, trail rides, etc. are all in the mix of possibilities.

My Program:
Track everything; Move more; Live fully.

Other Information:
I like painting and drawing (portraits mostly), photography, crocheting and sewing, making jewelry, decorating and DIY projects, music and reading. Eclectic tastes and varying skill levels for all interests.

As well as more active pursuits like gardening, walking, dancing, shooting pool, roadtrips, camping and hiking (unfortunately, not too often), and going out to shows, museums, galleries, etc.

I also volunteer -- for many issues over the years -- the last 4-5 years for veterans support. Tho I like history, I'm also interested in current events and policy -- mostly social and environmental issues.

I guess I haven't really noticed the ads here. There is one that pops up occasionally that might make me look, but I'm so good at zoning out commercials that I just don't really look. What gets me are the "diet ads" that pop up and I just have to laugh at. If I wanted to lose weight by popping a pill, I wouldn't be here.

Thank you for your kind words on my blog. I love the colorful flowers, it makes the back patio so pretty. The food on the Plan is amazing and it makes you want to eat the right things, even DH is getting brainwashed :)

Thanks for the comment on my page. I hope it helps you by seeing how I do it, but I'm not allergic to anything, so I am freer to have things in my diet. No matter who we are, but eating everything from the source, it's going to help. Have fun and try new things! May this site help you find out what you need! emoticon
