My journey

About 5 years ago I lost 100 lb. over 18 mo. and have maintained a 70 lb. loss. I have been struggling for some time to take off that weight off that I gained. I have been losing and gaining the same 5 lb. for some time. I am ready to get back to my goal and maintain a healthy lifestyle. On Mar. 18 of 2011 I had unexpected Open Heart Surgery. I have more reason now than ever to say motivated. I have food plan that is healthy, a food sponsor and much support through Overeaters Anonymous. ...
I feel like God has given me a second chance.

This is my story:
Success began with exercise
At age 60 it has become clear to me that exercise needs to be a priority in my life. Eight years ago I was assessed by a Physical Therapist who said if I did not do something about my physical condition, I would have permanent damage. He put me on a cardio & strength training program. After PT, I knew that I needed to continue to exercise but trying to do it on my own never worked for very long. Thatís when I decided that joining a gym would be the best thing I could do for myself. I joined the gym. I started out slowly. When I first began I could only do 3 min. on the elliptical trainer. Even though I was not losing weight at first I gained a lot of strength and endurance. I also overcame several obstacles. I had arthroscopic knee surgery and was facing a knee replacement if I did not lose weight. I have rotator cuff problems, hip and back problems all of which tremendously improved. I was also having hormonal issues and was told that it would be very difficult for me to lose weight during menopause. I was determined and did not give up. I adopted a healthy eating plan and stuck with my program. I have now lost over 100 pounds and have maintained that weight loss for 3 years. I am a Les Mills certified instructor and teach RPM classes. I am also a certified Spinning instructor through Mad Dog Athletics. This is a HUGE accomplishment for me.

For me fitness is not about having the perfect body. Itís about adopting an overall healthy lifestyle. I feel like exercise has given me a new lease on life.

Other Information:
People have asked so I thought I'd share:
My experience with plastic surgery

After I reached my goal and had been exercising for some time, I still had a lot of excess skin. I did cardio and weight lifting faithfully. I needed to have an abdominal hysterectomy and was disappointed that I had to be cut abdominally but because I never had children that was the method suggested to me. Then, I had a thought. Would it be possible to have a tummy tuck at the same time? I ask my GYN and she said that yes it could be done so off I went to see a plastic surgeon. He did a total body assessment and my main concerns were my arms, abs and legs. The legs were a whole different issue so we didnít even discuss that then. But he did say he could do the tummy tuck and braecheoplasty at the time of the hysterectomy. I had the hysterectomy first and then the plastic surgery in the same surgery. I was in surgery a long time. I think it was about 9 hours total. I was off work for 6

THANK YOU for the goodie! I am so happy when people ask about following a plant-based eating plan because there are so many health risks in eating meat, dairy, and processed foods, and so many benefits to eating this way. You are doing the right thing for sure! Thank you for recommending the post punk kitchen website! I'm going to browse it and see what looks good ; ) Your vegan eating plan sounds very good so far - keep going! It will take time to adjust to this way of eating (it requires more effort to make soups and a little more time at dinner to make brown rice or quinoa, but we'll get used to it). I'm only at the end of the 3rd week on this plan myself, but honestly, I don't feel the sugar cravings I used to feel, and I don't feel the need to binge eat at night like I used to : ) I hope you feel the same benefits right away as well.

The garlic/onion salad dressing is very easy - so easy that I usually eyeball the ingredients, so I'm not sure of exact measurements. I just shake together a flask full of the following:
Apple cider vinegar (this is the base of the dressing)
Canola oil (or you could probably use olive oil - use about 1/4 of this compared to the apple cider vinegar)
1/4 chopped onion
4 or 5 garlic cloves
sea salt
black pepper
This dressing is really good on spinach salad with red onions.

CHEERS to you for making this incredibly healthy decision. Please share your successes and any recipes that sound good...I think having variety is going to be key in making this plan work long-term.

OMG MAZZALIN, you are on the right track if you have started the Eat to Live plan...it will CHANGE EVERYTHING you've struggled with in your diet, and you will feel fantastic!

As Dr. Fuhrman said, you can eat UNLIMITED veggies, fruits and legumes on the 6 week plan. This means that you can eat until you feel satisfied every time you eat. I recommend that you go to the grocery store and buy a ton of romaine, spinach, and green leaf lettuce and a bunch of veggies to make salads with (tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, asparagus, broccoli, bell peppers, etc.) (Because you bought all these salad ingredients, they will motivate you to eat them since you don't want them to go bad ; ) Also buy canned beans like blackbeans, garbanzo beans, and kidney beans. Put them on your salads, it will make your salad more delicious and you will feel more satiated. I also recommend buying soup ingredients - dried lentils, onions, vegetable broth, garlic, etc and making simple soups. Get out a book from the library - I recommend "a life in balance" by Meg Wolff, or go online to search for vegan, plant-based recipes, I recommend http://healthygirlskitchen.blogspot.com. It will take some time and creativity to do this plan, but it is SO worth it.

Following are what I ate the past two days:
Friday:
Breakfast:
huge bowl of mixed berries (strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries) and a whole banana, along with a glass of water and a cup of unsweetened decaf green tea - I was stuffed afterward!

Lunch:
Homemade black bean soup and a small spinach salad with red onions and balsamic vinaigrette dressing, glass of water with lemon; unsweetened decaf green tea

Dinner:
Huge field green salad with soybeans, garbanzo beans, many vegetables, garlic and onion homemade salad dressing and a half of a baked sweet potato with cinnamon - Delicious and Nutritious! Glass of water, unsweetened peppermint herbal tea

Saturday:
Breakfast:
Steel cut oatmeal with a chopped honeycrisp apple and cinnamon; small bowl of mixed berries, glass of water, unsweetened green tea

Lunch:
Large field green salad with broccoli, asparagus, red pepper, and red onion with balsamic vinaigrette dressing and a half of a sweet potato with cinnamon, glass of water with lemon

Dinner:
Homemade black bean soup over quinoa (delicious!); small spinach salad with garlic and onion dressing; glass of water with lemon and a cup of peppermint herbal tea (unsweetened)

These meals are super-simple, they just take some planning. YOU CAN DO THIS! Eating like this simplifies your life and makes you super healthy without having to count calories or agonize about healthy food choices.

GOOD LUCK! Keep me posted on your progress.
