My me time, finally.

My Goals:
1. Lose 10 pounds to start. *CHECK*
2. Start exercising at least 30 minutes a week. (I tend to go gung-ho at first, so limiting myself at the beginning works best.)
3. Track food intake. *HALF CHECK. I know what I can and can't eat and am doing it most of the time.*

My Program:
Dr, Bernstein's Diabetes Solution - very low carb, average protein and high fat.

Hi, that was a good question about what you should do when your BS gets low on the Bernstein plan. I confess I STILL haven't checked the book and I have it here as well. Things have been too crazy for me, as usual.

I think I am probably going to have to go my own way, low carbing as best as I can, without following a set program with exact rules which drive me crazy. Last time I read at least 6 books to find one that was the easiest for me! Really, I don't even care for grains or sugar and I LOVE meat. However, my weakness is dairy and french fries and mexican food (which does call for grain) and that I don't eat enough iron sources to make up for the fortified grains I'm missing I guess, because my iron is always low on my blood tests since going low carb. Using the food tracker, it shows me eating way below the RDA for iron, while eating plenty of meat.

Hi Yogamommy5. Nice to 'meet' you. I've been following Dr. Bernstein's diet for about 3 weeks now. Not sure how my blood sugars have been, as I ran out of strips for one of my meters and lost the other meter that I have strips for. I have a new one coming soon, so I'll be able to check it then. I'm also having lab work done on the 12th, so I'm HOPING *fingers crossed* that I see some difference. So far, I've lost 9 pounds and have more energy. I've found that I do 'cheat' on weekends and so I've built that in and just don't make it too bad and actually I think I'm still 'low-carb' even when I'm 'bad', just not Dr. Bernstein low. I've had minimal problems following his plan and highly recommend it and his website has incredible forums with very helpful people. :)

Hi, good to see someone with similar goals.

I read your post about Dr. Bernstein's diet, and now that my Dr. gave me a call to warn me about high blood sugar, I think I may look into that again.

Originally, I was urging my mother who has diabetes 2 to read his book, while I was all Atkins, protein power and Paleolithic diet about 3 years ago when I started my weight loss/health journey. Well, now it looks like I'd better learn something fast before I'm in the same boat as her, as well as having to watch my cholesterol not to get heart disease like my father had.

My Dr. gave me some vague diet advice, watch the sugar, watch the fat, and she'd already told me to decrease protein too!! Really she means, how about that salad with no dressing? emoticon

Welcome back to SparkPeople! I've been on and off several times in the past couple of years but I'm also ready to make that commitment and 'get it done' :) Good luck and best wishes on your weight loss journey :)
