Building This Bridge for Them

I am a Catholic homeschooling mom of three beautiful kids - well, the oldest has finished college and is working now and the second is in college, so only my baby is left at home with me (except in the summers). My baby, Danny, who is thirteen, was diagnosed with medulloblastoma (brain cancer) in March of 2013. Since then he has undergone two major surgeries, six weeks of radiation, and over a year of chemotherapy. He was in remission for a few brief months, and then relapsed. This is a very difficult time for us.

I myself am a breast cancer survivor, and I have degenerative arthritis in my hip, which makes walking painful. Other than that, I am pretty healthy, for which I am extremely grateful.

We are looking into the best relapse treatment for Danny and I will post when I know more.

My Goals:
Right now my goals are to incorporate small healthy changes. One other goal is to be able to exercise without severe pain in my hip...not sure if that is feasible with my arthritis.

My Program:
Right now I am just trying to eat more fruits and vegetables, plus walking as much as I can without pain.

Personal Information:
I am originally an Army brat and have lived in quite a few places. Right now I am in Texas, at least for a while. I have three kids, ages 23, 20, and 13. My degrees are in chemistry, but right now I am concentrating on getting Danny caught up with his academic work after cancer treatment.

Other Information:
Strength of character isn't always about how much you can handle before you break, it's also about how much you can handle after you've broken.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment on my blog. I understand the article's target audience, but I wish spark could make their point without putting down those of us who use daily weight data wisely. We are neither obsessed nor compulsive.

Thank you so much for your comments and compliments on my blogs. When I look at you and Danny I see so much inspiration. Danny for all he's going through but I also think its sometimes harder on the moms than the child. It's really hard on him I know but I've never had to watch one of my children go through what you've had to see and deal with. So I guess we inspire each other LOL. Anyway, you know how awesome Danny is in spite of his fight against some of his treatments. But remember how awesome YOU are.

I wouldn't hesitate to take AMTRAK again. I remember back in the 60s when it was run so badly that either the government had to take it over or there would be no passenger trains at all.

When we were living on an army post back then, some guys told us the horror story of being abandoned on the train when the crew's shift was over and something prevented the replacement crew from arriving.

Whatever the case, the only delays we experienced was when people with disabilities had to take extra time to board or get off the train. I'm glad this form of transportation is available to them. There were wheelchairs and walkers and one man who was blind. Crewmembers were there to assist them all.

We were only 12 minutes late going to RI and 22 minutes late returning. Not bad and a very pleasant and restful journey.

DH drove to a conference in Atlanta a few weeks ago and now says that next time he would take the train.
