Getting better with age:)

I can honestly say that my 50s have been absolutely ˇ§MARVELOUSˇ¨.

After being overweight most of my life; including childhood, I have finally reached a point where I am eating to live and not living to eat. I have dropped the label of being full-figure or big boned but have actually been described as ˇ§healthyˇ¨ fit, or sexy.

The combination of losing weight, exercising and strength training I was able to turn my body age back to 42; a gain of 15 years.

In 2009, at age 55, I set my sight to ˇ§figure competeˇ¨ and I accomplished that goal. I competed twice and the second time around I finished in 3rd place for the age group 50 and over. Also at age 55, I completed my first 5K for breast cancer, where I placed 3rd for age 50 ˇV 55 female. This is from a woman who hates to run and at the best use to be able to run in one minute increments.

I am one of those rare women who went through menopause without any major issues or need for medication and I think one of the factors which contributed to an easy transaction was because of my healthy life style. Also because of the strength training, my bone density results either improved or have not decrease over the last few years. All of these factors I owe to a healthy life style.

Life is great and how many 58 year old women still have the guts to put on a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleading outfit and jump out of a birthday cake.

I cannot wait to see how ˇ§FANTASTICˇ¨ my 60s will be , which is two years from now, because I have truly ˇ§ROCKEDˇ¨ my 50s.

You are only as old as you feel and I feel great!!!

Charlene

Hi Char,

Thanks for stopping by and catching me up with what has been going on with you. Wow, so Rodney is finally going to get that knee replacement, hopefully during that time, your great nutrition/exercise habits will rub off on him.

I am glad that you are getting your knee taken care of. You are physically strong and I feel your recovery will be speedy, it does make a difference. In the meantime you can still do upper body work and isometric type core work.. Maybe you can still do some pilates mat/floor work for the core... no impact to the lower body.

I am mixing it up these days, trying not to get any overuse injuries, especially from the strength training. I am finding that I like to do a variety of workouts, keeps it interesting too! I try to do a full body workout on Sunday, if I am not too sore, do split workouts during the week, with at least 2 lower body workouts for the week. I walk everyday, to and from work, an hour each way, weather permitting. When I get home I try to add on a HIIT/Tabata type workout for cardio on the non-ST days, This morning I did LES MILL COMBAT workout, a combination of MMA Boxing and boxing... later I will be doing a full body with the Fluidity bar (body only using a ballet barre) and Physique 57 upper body with light weights/bands. These are tough workouts.

Well I need to get started on my batch cooking. I tried to get chicken meatballs from Trader Joes yesteray and the package was bloated. I reported it to Customer Service, so I couldn't buy any. I decided to buy some ground turkey and just make my own with sundried tomatoes, cheese/basil, roasted butternut squash, baked plantains, sauteed kale w/bacon and grilled jerk and tandoori chicken. I have to start preparing the marinades for the chicken and I will grill them later on. today. I want to also roast some sweet potatoes. I have a lot to do, but I am glad I am in a cooking mood today!

Have a wonderful Sunday and good luck on your surgery Wednesday. I will check in with you. Don't worry about anything.

Hi Char, thanks for stopping by,

I was feeling tired and drained so thought it best to take a week off. I did strength training workouts for 6 weeks and for me they were strenuous; high reps, low/moderate weights, but I had not been doing any type of strength training on a regular basis (in over a month) before I started this new workout. I love the program, but I need to pace myself and also make sure that I am eating enough.

What are you doing now, are you going consistently to the gym?... how are your knees, are you able to spin? I know what you mean about not stopping exercise, it is really hard to get back into the form you were in prior to having to stop. Sometimes it's unavoidable, so we do the best we can. You have been doing great despite your injuries and you have to be careful.

Well, stop by and catch me up when you get a chance... are you posting your workouts, etc., anywhere, like on a team? It was so motivating having you as a teammate. Talk to you later.
