Over 45 years old over 250 cholesterol

Here I am 46 years old with 256 cholesterol and 241 pounds ~ obese *sigh. November of 2010 I joined a gym and work out 5 to 6 days a week. Run on the treadmill for 20 minutes then lift heavy weights. In February 2011 I was down to a 34 inch waist and 211 pounds. I swore I would never allow myself to put the weight back on but I did. I am back to 241 pounds. My nutritionists recommended I join Spark People and here I am. Most of the time I eat healthy at night when I am home and junk food ...

My nutritionists recommended I join Spark People and here I am. Most of the time I eat healthy at night when I am home and junk food is everywhere I eat poorly. My wife is thin and keeps a lot of candy, cookies and chips around and I eat them because I like them. My goal is to stay below 18 grams of saturated fat, reduce the meats I eat and increase the grains. GNC put me on a heart healthy supplement program and we will see what happens. My doctor wants to see me for a follow up that should be fun.
Cholesterol 256; Trig 101; Cholest/HDL Ratio 4.27; HDL 60; LDL 176
Glucose 103
Man this is depressing I could really go for a beer and some nachos to cheer me up!

Hi Mark, We are both on the cholesterol team and the eating whole foods team. I am reading a book called Foods that Cause You To Lose Weight by Dr. Neal Barnard. I and my guy are going Vegetarian because of our health issues. I really think we are on the right track. I have been eating a ton of fruits and veges and I have been under my calories for the day for the past 3 days. I joined SP 3 days ago. I can't believe how full I am from all the great veges and fruits. I have been making soups out of veges and beans and that is another great way to fill up for very little calories.

Oatmeal is great for breakfast because it fills you up. I use coconut milk on mine and it tastes great. I also use some cinnamon and splenda on it.

I think you are doing a great job and you are on the right track.

I just welcomed you on the Clean Eating and recipes team.

These are some great books on lowering your cholesterol and losing weight. These are vegetarian diets (I'm vegetarian so I find this easy to follow) but alot of people are lowering there cholesterol, blood pressure and alot of other things just by not eating animal products.

There are other books but these are my favorites. Hope this helps(even if you you don't go vegetarian the books still are great)

The 21-day Weight Loss Kickstart by Neal D. Barnard

Engine 2 Diet by Rip Esselstyn

Eat to Live by Joel Furhman
