Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things

My name is Monica and I'm from Oklahoma. I'm Korean-American and grew up in a fairly traditional Korean home. I feel that my childhood was always healthy considering my sisters' and I always ate home cooked Korean food which is lots of veggies, homemade stocks, and not a lot of frying or buttering. My family would only eat out once a month... maybe twice. My mom was sooo great about taking care of us. I played basketball in high school and was a committed player and got to eat anything I wanted to at school or when we took trips for away games. I thought I always wanted to do something related to sports, but in college I realized I wanted to help people through health. I graduated with a health education and promotion degree recently.

I have become somewhat obsessed with my weight and how I looked when I was in high school and comparing myself to the old me. My personal opinions has caused me to stress about what I should look like and how healthy I want to be. With the social media and how skinny a woman is to be attractive and me being Asian compared to the typical skinny Asian girl it really affects me in a negative way. A few years ago I had gained about 15 pounds and was unhappy about it for at least a year or 2. I know 15 pounds may not sound like a lot but for me, it was uncomfortable and being short doesn't help! I managed to lose that weight by working out and eating less but didn't make a permanent change with my diet. Now I just keep going back and forth 5-10 pounds and it does affect what I wear. So now, I am focusing on working out and eating better and staying at a static weight. I'll do it.... I know I can. Just need to be positive.

Fitness Minutes: 270

My Goals:
To be less lazy when coming to food!

My Program:
I enjoy cooking and am always watching Food Network and online looking for recipes. I am always trying to find different ways to improve my eating habits.

I work an 8-5 job and the gym I go to is always packed after 5 pm. I hate working out at home, yet I like to work out by myself at the gym. I will go workout during my lunch hour and eat lunch during work.

Personal Information:
I'm from a small town in Oklahoma.

I graduated with a Health Education and Promotion degree.

I plan on going to grad school in fall 2012 in public health with a focus on health behavior.

I miss playing basketball and played as much as I could in intramural sports.

Other Information:
I am very family oriented. I love my mom and dad with all my heart and intend on settling down near them because wherever Mom and Dad are, it's home.

Most people's guilty snack is chocolate or some kind of sweet. I prefer fried foods! =( I guess that's my biggest problem about living in the south.

emoticon Greetings and emoticon

Congrats on taking the next step to reaching a healthier you by getting active with SparkPeople - it's a great community, wonderful resources and fantastic support.

Please check out the SparkTeams - I think you will find a lot of others 'just like you' there. You can choose SparkTeams by age group, lifestyle or interests, geographic location or several other ways - some of the teams you might like include the Official 10-minute Daily Exercise Streak Challenge, Starting Over Weekly Mini-Challenge Team, 10k Steps A Day and Motivation & Positive Attitude Plan but there are so many to choose from, you can have a great time looking for the ones that seem to fit you best! In fact, I suggest joining more than one group, post your intro there and write blogs as often as you can - you will find tons of friends and support that way, I promise!!

In my experience, SparkPeople is like a emoticon in some ways - it's lots of fun and easy to make friends because we're all in this together. I like the way a HEALTHY LIFESTYLE is emphasized instead of a 'quick fix wonder diet' so it's good for people wanting to lose weight, maintain a previous loss, get healthier, improve fitness and many other goals - it's about waaaaaay more than 'just' losing weight so you have definitely come to the right place!

If you ever need any help using features of the site, there are tutorial videos under the HELP section that can show you how to use the features of the site. You can also find them on the START page and several other places on the site.

If you haven't already discovered The Spark book and/or the SparkDiet linked at the bottom of the START page, check them out - the program is simple but extremely effective. There is a TON of information on this site - so much it might even seem overwhelming but fortunately we don't have to 'digest' everything at once! The FastBreak program is a good way to start.

Another nice thing about SparkPeople is that we have permission to be human - we don't have to change everything at once or be in a hurry to reach our goals. Take a few baby steps and then a few more and before you know it, you'll have completed a long journey - I hope you enjoy this community as much as I do - it teaches us how to make positive lifetime changes because that's the only thing that will work over time!
