Making Changes and Losing Weight One Pound at a Time!
Hi, I am a 30 something professional in the Nashville, TN area. I have struggled with my weight since high school. I have just continued to gain more weight each year. I knew I had to make a change when at the beginning of 2008 when I weighed in at 241! I had become so uncomfortable in my own skin. I couldn't even look at myself in the mirror and I had begun shying away from going places because I didn't look good in my clothes anymore. I am glad I found Sparkpeople in April 2008 while watching ...
I am glad I found Sparkpeople in April 2008 while watching The Today Show. I signed up that day, but didn't really begin using the site until June. I had already lost about 10lbs on my own. But, being here has motivated me tremendously. I have learned soooo much about fitness, healthy eating and how to live it and not diet.
I have met some fabulous people on this journey. Sparkers are the best encouragers in the world. It is great to login in an instantly be welcomed by those who are on the same journey I am. Let me tell you (and my family and friends will tell you too) I have changed! For the better of course. I have a more confident walk and I am even more upbeat and I am encouraging them to get healthy too. If you need a buddy or have a question, feel free to drop me a Sparkmessage. I love meeting new Sparkers!!

THE SCALE ISN'T EVERYTHING!!!
To stay motivated, try finding other ways to measure your progress instead of stepping on the scale. Try some benchmarks that actually matter. Some may be tougher to measure than others, some are more subjective. But we think you'll find that these measurements can still be a lot more meaningful and motivating.
Take some of these regular measurements to stay motivated, even if the scale isn't moving:
* Body Measures - dress size, waist, hips, neck, arms, fitting into favorite clothes
* Performance - more endurance during exercise, doing them at a higher level, jumping higher, walking longer, running faster, playing a sport better
* General Feeling - rate energy level, rate attitude and outlook, track how often you feel very sleepy during the day, rate your confidence level
* Health - blood pressure, cholesterol level, blood sugar level
* Intangibles - how you look, compliments you receive, how others respond to you
GW - 160
(I did this myself and I admit I had no idea what I was doing, LOL!
Arms - 13"
Waist - 40 1/4"
Thighs - 24 1/2"
Bust - 48 3/4"
Neck - 15 3/4"
Hips - 44
Setting good, measurable & attainable goals is a little more involved than simply saying, "I want to lose weight and get fit."
The "SMART" system of goal setting is a very effective method. It takes some work and time, but the results are worth it.
SMART stands for: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely
An example of a SMART goal:
* SPECIFIC goals should answers questions about who is involved, what will be accomplished, and when.
* MEASURABLE goals should have concrete and measurable criteria
* ATTAINABLE goals are ones that can be achieved. Many others already have.
* REALISTIC goals are ones you know you can reach -- if you're willing to work hard to achieve it.
* TIMELY goals specify a period of time and are not left to chance.
Consider all of these when settings goals for yourself.
Here are some MOTIVATIONS to help you succeed...

O ut with the negative thoughts
T hink of why you want it

V isualize the future you

My goal is to achieve my goal weight while embracing a healthier lifestyle.
Reach 160lbs by July 2009
I basically watch what I eat. I try to get more greens and fruits. I seriously try to stay away from fast foods. I eat out a lot because of my work schedule, but I have started making healthier choices when doing so. I also work out three or four times per week for at least an hour. I have just been doing cardio, but am now adding some circuit/strength training as well. I have basically cut out all sweets (but if I have a craving I give in). With every change I make sure it is something I am willing to do for life.
