Lucy's Diet

My name is Lucy, I'm a SAHM of four boys, and happily married to my high school sweetheart. I was slim my whole life, but after I got pregnant with #1, I started to gain weight. Then I put on more pounds with baby #2. By God's grace, we adopted lads #3 and #4-- but heck, I even gained baby weight with our *adopted* kids! ;-) No clue how I managed to do *that*-- the stress, I guess. ...

My name is Lucy, I'm a SAHM of four boys, and happily married to my high school sweetheart. I was slim my whole life, but after I got pregnant with #1, I started to gain weight. Then I put on more pounds with baby #2. By God's grace, we adopted lads #3 and #4-- but heck, I even gained baby weight with our *adopted* kids! ;-) No clue how I managed to do *that*-- the stress, I guess.

I have struggled with various illnesses (esp. IBS) as well as the stress of parenting two precious children with special needs (reactive attachment disorder, so common in older adoptions). I've fallen on and off the fitness wagon, and kept losing and re-gaining the same five pounds. For Lent of 2013, I went vegan and LOVED it. The pounds began to fly off and I felt terrific... but when it became difficult, I returned to my unhealthy habits, mainly emotional-eating. By the end of 2013, I felt bloated and lousy, caught whooping cough, then experienced a severe allergic reaction to the medication, was in lots of pain, got diagnosed with arthritis in my lower back, and barely got out of bed. Something had to change!!!

2014 is MY year. I just turned 46 and it is time to take care of myself! I love my family and I want to be around-- and pain free!-- to watch my sons grow up! Thankfully, I am blessed with a wonderful marriage and TOTALLY supportive husband. Ricky recently re-joined me on the plant-based lifestyle, too. Having a "buddy" makes all the difference! Now we climb our steep canyon nearly every day together, but if he can't because of work, I STILL DO! I also take local yoga classes, and see an acupuncturist to manage my pain. I am learning to take care of me!

*Update*
3/02/14~ I lost my first 10 lbs... and then came a (very unusual) menstrual cycle. Though I didn't do anything differently, my weight fluctuated a lot. I also had my first HOT FLASH, which, combined with many other symptoms, helped me realize I'm not going insane... I am entering perimenopause!!! But can I just say, perimenopause is like PMS *on crack*! How will I (and my family) survive the next few years?! Well, I am reading and learning all I can, and I just started using natural progesterone cream and many herbs, vitamins and minerals that I learned about in Ann Louise Gittleman's book, "The Change before the Change." I think educating myself is the first step to sailing as *smoothly* as I can through this new season. (Lord, have mercy!) :-)

My Goals:
~to lose 20 lbs. by 4/09/14. (I plan to lose more, but 20 lbs. is my *first* weight loss goal.)
~yes, to lose my "big, bloated, bunch of blubber!" (Lucy :-)

~my family's favorite place to play is the beach; another of my goals is to wear a swimsuit without hiding under a towel the whole time!

I keep a tally on my refrigerator calendar to make sure I drink 8 to 10 glasses of water each day!

Other Information:
I have struggled with episodes of debilitating back pain my whole adult life, which was recently diagnosed as arthritis, but I'm not going to let it hold me back in 2014!

I can whip up the best smoothies-- I am the Queen of the Healthful Smoothie!
